'My great great Aunt was a staff Sergeant in the ATS. She died in 2001 at the age of 95. Her medals were awarded for her service in WWII.

The women's branch of the army was called the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). It was formed in 1938, just before the outbreak of war. The women were sent to army camps for their basic training. At the end of the training there were written and practical texts to find out which line of work they were suited too. Some of the women were cooks, clerks, motor bike messengers and engineers. They drove staff cars, trucks and repaired the vehicles.

My great great Aunt did all sorts of things in the ATS. These medals commerated her service.'
