Amy Johnson's Flying Suit

Contributed by Sewerby Hall

Dark green twill fabric flying suit used by the famous aviatrix Amy Johnson (1903-1941).

The suit was designed and worn by Amy Johnson in about 1929-1930.The suit was part of the collection of artefacts donated by Amy Johnson's father, J.W. Johnson to Sewerby Hall Museum in 1958. It was supposedly designed by Amy herself and features zip / hook fastenings at the front and large knee pockets for such items as maps. Amy's achievements included the first solo flight from England to Australia (May 5th-24th 1930) and record flights from England - South Africa (1932 & 1936). Amy Johnson, the pioneering aviator, was born in Hull on 1st July 1903. Her first solo flight was made after less than 16 hours tuition and she was one of the first women in Britain to obtain a ground engineers licence. 2010 will be the 80th anniversary since her solo flight from Croyden to Port Darwin in Australia. She joined the Air Transport Auxiliary as a pilot in World War II and was lost after baling out over the Thames estuary.
