Dutch East Indies Army Rucksack

Rucksack made for Dutch East Indies Army. Japanese issued Prisoner's of War with this captured equipment. It belonged to Jim Smith from Salisbury. He was a radar technician in the RAF when he was captured in Java in February 1942. He spent 3 and a half years as a POW. He carried all his possessions in the rucksack when he was moved from camp to camp. The rucksack included photos, a small pillow, a small bible, a book of short stories. The rucksack has a secret compartment in the bottom where he used to hide bits of a radio. The camp was liberated in August 1945 by the Australians.
