This 1/2 gill measure belonged to the owner's father who served in the Royal Navy. He was served a rum ration daily. The last rum ration was on the Silver Jubilee 1977. It was said that people joined the Navy for the rum. These 1/2 gill measures were used before optics. The inscription on the measure reads "Able seaman AB Stannard, HMS Naiad; The Last to 31st July 1970".
