1920s fireman's helmet

Contributed by Southwold Museum

1920s fireman's helmet

A fireman's helmet issued by Southwold Corporation's own Fire Brigade in 1920. Note the dent in the crest caused by falling timbers in the fire which burned down Denny's store in Southwold High Street in the 1920s on the site of what is now the Somerfield supermarket. Southwold was then an autonomous Borough in its own right which provided the community with most of its own services and utilties locally.
