This box was used to collect funds in chapels to support missionary work around 1898.Two hundred and fifty years ago, non-conformist Christians took Wales by storm. Having they believed, saved the souls of the Welsh, some saw it as their mission to turn their attention further afield.
Saving souls across the World cost money. Welsh families collected funds in boxes like these to finance Christian health and education programmes overseas.
Welsh missionaries made their biggest impression in Africa, Asia and the South Pacific. They did not target major religions such as Hinduism and Islam, but concentrated on other smaller faiths. Many believe that missionary work destroyed the indigenous cultures and beliefs of countless communities, whilst others see their contribution as a constructive one, helping communites to develop politically, linguistically and economically.
Today missionaries visit Wales in an attempt to convert a now largely godless nation back to Christianity.

the comment that missionaries now visit Wales to convert a largely godless nation seems excessive - what evidence exists to support this?
