Sony Vaio, 2000 Vintage

Sony Vaio, 2000 Vintage

This is my old Sony Vaio Z600TEK laptop. I bought it in 2000 and it was my main computer until I changed to an Apple Powerbook G4 - the aluminium one - in 2005. It runs Windows 2000, has 128Mb of RAM and a 20GB hard drive, but it cost £2000. Compared to today's computers it is slow and heavy with little battery life and a poor screen, but it transformed my life because it was the first laptop I owned that could do everything I needed a computer for, and it freed me from the need to work at a desk or find a power supply. I bought a network card for it - it doesn't have wifi built in - and it made me a digital nomad and let me connect to the internet while on the move.

I've been using laptop computers for nearly twenty years, but this Vaio marked the moment at which I put my head inside the screen and began to see the computer and network as part of my existence instead of just a tool. I've probably spent fewer than twenty days without using a laptop since I first took this machine out of its box.
