Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio Sheffield presenter Gareth Evans submitted this 1980s British Rail badge which depicts the Advanced Passenger Train, a tilting High Speed Train developed in the 1970s.
"I owned it when I was about 10 years old," writes Gareth. "As with most things I owned as a ten-year-old I lost it but recently, while visiting Barrow Hill Roundhouse near Chesterfield, I found one for sale and I just had to buy it. It was from a collection of railway badges some of which were donkeys years old. This one is quite modern but to me its historical significance is deep and sad. It was much trumpeted at the turn of the decade as the future of rail travel and then promptly abandoned. It is probably British Railway Engineering's last major development in passenger rail transport. An industry synonymous with South Yorkshire, I thought it fitting that this final throw of the dice, if you like, should end its life in our patch. In July 1986 C.F. Booths in Rotherham, with the media swamping the site, scrapped several vehicles from the APT fleet. So it's not a terribly old badge but what it depicts for me is the sad end of an industry."
