This piece of machinery has a handle attached to a series of cogs with a roller beneath which would be powered at speed by the cogs when the handle was turned. The contributor has sought expert opinion on the object and has been assured that it is related to farming activity. It was probably used for sharpening blades as the roller part of the device is a sharpening stone. It was manufactured in the USA by the firm of McCormick, Chicago (established 1831), a company famous in its time for the agricultural machines they produced such as combine harvesters, grain reapers and bailers.
