Celia Birtwell is a textile designer, born in Prestwich, near Bury, in 1941.
She lived in Prestwich until the age of 13. She studied Textile Design at the Salford School of Art in 1956; whilst studying at Salford she met the fashion designer Ossie Clark in the Cona Coffee Bar in Manchester, they married in 1969. She was David Hockney's muse during the 60's and features in his painting Mr and Mrs Clarke and Percy.

Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell parted in 1974 and Celia left the fashion world to raise her two sons. Celia returned to designing in 1984.

In 2002, Celia designed the first of four print collections for the French label Cacharel. In 2005/6 she designed clothing for the high street chain Topshop. In 2008 she also designed a collection of tents and tepees for Millets.
