This bowl is from the Solomon Islands and the technique used to craft it has been around for hundreds of years. Handcrafted in the village of Honiara, the villagers (generally women) will sit and craft the bowls using tools such as hammers, chisels and sandpaper. Shells are then inlayed into the outside rim of the bowl as the decorative finish. Beeswax is then used as finishing polish and as a glue to hold the shells in place. The bowl is a functional item in everyday living as well as a ceremonial piece, important in bring families and other social groups together.
