This was given to me when I was a child in London in the 1960s by an old lady - a spinster - who lodged with my next door neighbour, shortly before she left to live in a guest house. She was not wealthy and I didn't know her well. I was amazed at her generosity. It was a real lesson to me in the benefits of selfless generosity. The brooch was in a box implying it was bought in MARTIN'S JEWELERY & GIFT SHOP, BEDFORD N.S. I presume that means Nova Scotia - do not know how it got to London.
So: spinsters in London were not wealthy - lived as lodgers. Selfless generosity was not commonplace. Silver brooches were used as gifts, shipped from Canada to London
