roman intaglio ring

Objects from this contributor

This Roman intaglio depicts the godess Fortuna and was carved in the first century AD. I think of all that it has seen over the past two millenia. I don't know where it was carved - anywhere in the Roman Empire is what I have been told by the museum at Vindolanda in Northumberland. Perhaps it was worn by a Roman soldier during the occupation of Britania? Or during the sack of Rome?

There are a couple of things I would like to point out about the description of the intaglio. Firstly, I do not believe that it depicts Fortuna, it appears to me to be Mars. Secondly, I believe that a date of the second century would be more appropriate for the engraving. Other than this it is a very interesting object in a category of personal interest to me and I am glad to have seen it.
