Episode 48
Having settled on exploring places associated with Whisky Galore, Marsaili and Sìleas sail across the Sound of Barra to Ceann a' Gharaidh on the Isle of Eriskay. They chat to a fellow passenger who regales them with a first-hand account of the events of 1941 when the S.S Politician ran aground carrying a large consignment of whisky, some of which fell into the hands of islanders, delighted at this contraband windfall during wartime rationing.
Once ashore they admire empty bottles from the original cargo. Relaxing after a leisurely picnic lunch, history lover Marsaili suddenly gasps - she can't believe her ears! Their portable radio plays in the background and, introducing the Jacobite song Ailein, Ailein, ‘s Fhad an Cadal, the presenter casually mentions that Prince Charles Edward Stewart himself came ashore in Eriskay on 23 July 1745!
Marsaili resolves to visit this landmark site at once. All historied out, Sìleas really could do with letting her hair down and, having hummed along to the radio for much of the afternoon, now fancies a good cèilidh dance, she has even seen one advertised.
