ArtsFestYou are in: Birmingham > Entertainment > ArtsFest > Birmingham's Light Night ![]() Light Night in Birmingham Birmingham's Light NightA phenomenon that has been sweeping Europe, Birmingham’s first ever Light Night will be launching this year’s ArtsFest, the UK’s biggest free arts festival, on Friday 12 September 2008. ![]() Fire poi Night carnival and fire poiBirmingham City Centre will be transformed for the evening, allowing visitors to experience the familiar sites of the city, literally, in a whole new light.Ìý A night carnival parade including dancers, street performers and fire poi will wind its way through a landscape of architecturally illuminated buildings and projections, following trails of light installations and accompanied by lively Samba bands and dhol drumming.Ìý ![]() Ex Cathedra Candlelit choral performancesThe city’s stunning fountains will glow with candles and lantern displays, providing a beautiful background to the captivating choral performances of local acapella singers Kiss The Ceiling in Chamberlain Square.Ìý Ex Cathedra will be performing against the illuminated Burne Jones stained glass window in Birmingham Cathedral. Painting with lightOther cultural institutions including the Ikon Gallery and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery will be open late for visitors to explore, and the Council House will be hosting a variety of exhibitions.Ìý Featured amongst these will be acclaimed sculptor Willard Wigan, as well as newcomer Sonia Bhamra who creates unique installations by ‘painting with light’.Ìý The Museum Restaurant will be offering candlelit evening meals to hungry visitors, which can be booked on 0121 303 2318. ![]() Willard Wigan The Archers StarBroad Street’s famous Walk of Stars will also be getting another addition, with the cast of the popular radio programme The Archers receiving the accolade as part of the Light Night celebrations. Reggae RockzThe Reggae Rockz concert in Centenary Square will run late into the night, with performances from The Acoustic Theatre (formerly The Beat) and other great reggae artists from the region.Ìý The concert will be headlined by Basil Gabbidon, formerly of the band Steel Pulse, which frequently toured with Bob Marley in the 70s.Ìý ![]() Gabbidon Cllr Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said, "Birmingham is proud to be among the first cities in the UK to present the amazing concept of Light Night to our citizens and visitors.Ìý This magical and extraordinary journey will be another jewel in the annual spectacular of ArtsFest."
