Position
Position includes several different elements:
- levelsLevels can be created through position of the body, set or staging. They show action in a different place/time and can reflect relationships. are very important, eg if you wish to show dominance you will probably have the person in authority on a higher level.
- Closeness is also important as there鈥檚 usually much greater intensity when the characters are close together.
- Distance shows how intimate characters are with each other.
- Posture is the position of a person's body when standing or sitting, eg a soldier would stand upright but a drunk person would slump.
- How the characters use their space (if they take a lot of room for instance).
This clip shows actors at the Soho Theatre in London in a scene from the play, Fit and Proper People by Georgia Fitch. They explore the effects of body language, status and the use of space and try different approaches to an attempted kiss to see if this changes our reading of the characters' relationship. It becomes apparent that body language can completely change how a scene is interpreted by the audience.
