Flowcharts are not only used in a systems approach to designing. In manufacturing, flowcharts are often used to provide clear instructions to a machine operator of a complicated machine to avoid errors or to ensure a high level of quality.

A designer may use a flowchart to represent how a product should be operated, repaired or maintained to the owner. For example, if a common household electronic product such as a dishwasher displayed an error, a flowchart could be used to help identify the issue and find a suitable solution.
