My design is mainly influenced by a celebration that takes place every year in Mexico, El Dia De Muerto or The Day of the Dead. This day is a national festival with many parades which involve many colourful, bold costumes. Part of this day is to scare away all the bad spirits which is why I used black in my design, to represent the evil. The orange represents the other meaning of the day, to celebrate the lives of the deceased. I used orange because to me, it's quite a joyful colour and I also think it represents Mexican landscape and climate. The patterns on the dress come from the sugar skulls that are used for decoration on the day. On these skulls they make the colours contrast therefore I used the oranges and the blues together. The last thing is the beads which make up the pattern. This idea was influenced by Matthew Williamson and his work, he uses beads, sequins and heavy patterns to make the sophisticated, simple shapes of his dresses more interesting.
