Title: Mexican Dress

One of the first things I noticed when I started researching both Mexican culture and Matthew Williamson's work was the re-occurring use of layers. In Mexico the layers are used in the clothing mainly as different tiers on skirts, especially on costumes such as those used for dancing. I noticed Matthew Williamson uses different layers throughout his clothes to create a distinctive finish and I tried to incorporate both ideas into my design. The bottom right photograph of the dancers inspired me with the idea of using a shirt and a colourful waist-band, which I exaggerated more in my piece. This band would be created using crepe satin to imitate the look of ribbon. I noticed that Matthew Williamson often uses hoods in his work, so I took the traditional Mexican poncho and altered it into a unique style hood/shawl. The top-right photograph is of traditional Mexican bridal wear, I tried to re-create the appearance of the bottom of the dress pictured, at the bottom of my own design. Finally I chose the main colour of orange in the dress to represent the warm climate in Mexico, I used yellow and red for the same reason and then contrasted them with a cooler colour, blue.
