Title: World of Words

by Rachel from Norfolk | in writing, poetry, lyrical

Whether it’s child or adult, boy or girl,
Fiction or non, tales of heaven or hell.
There’s one for all who love to read,
This world of words we all should heed.

Adventures and biographies,
Classics and detective,
Epics and fantasies,
The topics are unending.

Gothic and historical,
Idioms and jokes,
Knowledge and limericks,
Words wrap round you like a cloak.

Mysteries with Marple,
Or even H. Poirot,
Narnia with Lewis,
Still many more to go.

Odysseys and Poems,
Q & A to make you think,
References and facts,
To look through with a drink.

Shakespeare and his sonnets,
Thesauruses with meanings,
Ulysses and his adventures,
All of it’s appealing.

This journey through the alphabet has almost been completed,
But V does stand for voyages and if they were defeated.
For W there’s Wilde and also Wodehouse too,
X is quite a hard one though; I’ll leave that up to you.

Y is for Yorick (alas I knew him well),
And Zeus with Greek mythology for which there are many tales to tell.
This journey through the world of words was an enjoyable sensation.
Just remember this dear friend: books are the carriers of civilisation.

I wrote this poem when I was 15 to explain the importance of books to the world.
