Title: You are what you wear

by Esther from Gloucestershire | in writing, poetry

Spotlights flick on, I fish
Through the wardrobe; Who shall I be today?

I could be anyone really. An artist?
Cardigan thrown over a battered pair
Of jeans. Beret perched at an impossible angle.
No ' I was an artist yesterday.

Maybe I could be an intellect; throw myself
Into my studies today. Smart suit, Smart shoes,
Smart mind, Smart me. But my mind is veiled
With morning mist. I don't feel smart today.

Guess what? I could be available today. Mum
Won't like it, but today is the day I can do
Anything I want. Torn miniskirt, Tight top
Trendy boots; I could be Available and Invincible.

I'll have breakfast in my PJ's. Decide later.
Put on my face first, must keep up
Appearances with the family.

Straighteners plugged in, steaming merrily in the corner
I mix potions and lotions, smells and scents
Because whoever I choose to be today,
The face must always be the same;
Always immaculate

Hair? Up? Down? Sleek? Scrunched?
Scrunched. It's in a messy mood this morning.
26 pins (I counted exactly)
Stuck into my head
'Casually coiffed'. Yes, I like those words.

I'm going to be different today, I've decided.
No jeans, no tight top, no clunky bling
Because everyone wears that. I'll be a
Minimalist. Plain purple top under
Plain purple tunic. Black tights. Figure hugging.
Yes.

Butterflies on my ears
Because I am young
And my heart is fragile

'Yes' I breathe to the mirror. I write 'me' in the
Liquid life, hovering over my reflection, a label.
Spotlight off, head down to breakfast, down to life.

I am ruler of the world today. The best. Beautiful.
I am myself today.

Having to choose what to wear in 6th form, the first time without uniform; I had to think carefully about how others would see me!
