Title: One of the many

by Bushra | in writing, non-fiction

Pakistan is country. A country that you may call unpredictable, especially when it comes to politics. One might not know what the situation of the country may be in a few minutes later.
One calm day, on the 27th of December 2007, the potential prime minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, went to give a conference on Rawalpindi.
Of course, everything didn't stop due to this, but what happened during this conference put a halt to most things that were assumed to most likely happen during the day. I was one of those many people who had thoroughly planned as winter break was about to end soon. I went with a few cousins and friends to the skating rink where we were to spend the day. We waited quite a while for our turn. When we received our skates a random person told us that Benazir Bhutto, during her convention in Rawalpindi, was assassinated. Panicked I was. Although I lived in Karachi, Pakistan is a country where an important person's death gives patriots their worst fury, throwing open anger attacks (throughout the country).
We were stuck in the rank for quite a while, I for one wanted to leap into the car and drive home but everyone said that we were more safe here then outside as it was just us girls. We couldn't get in contact with anyone. All networks had shut down so no one could make a call. The people who were stuck with us said they were ready to stay the night at the rink (if permitted) to escape the dangers. Thankfully, my uncle walked to the rink and drove us home in my cousin's car.
When I reached home, I came to understand how it happened. After her rally for Pakistan's People Party (PPP), giving a delivery to her supporters related to the elections in January, 2008, Bhutto entered her bullet-proof vehicle. She smiled and waved through the sun-roof. At that moment, the gunman started firing shots at her and explosive items were thrown near the vehicle killing about 20 people. Bhutto was rushed to the hospital and taken into immediate surgery. She was then pronounced dead. Bhutto was flown to Larkana District in Sindh where she was buried near her father in the family mausoleum.
There are a lot of theories about Benazir Bhutto's death and who planned this murder but 'til this day there haven't been any solid suspects.
The assassination of this politician brought along an anger strike, many people were killed and many were kidnapped. There were open fires and cars were burnt. Many indescribable things happened on this day though this may be just one of those many days when 'all hells break lose'.
