Title: In the Lions Den

by Melissa from London | in writing, fiction

My Earliest memory, is when I was about three years old, its a memory; who's grip tightens as moments pass.
I Can remember the tears, that streamed from her heavy eyes.
The deep lines of her sorrow permanently stamped on her face, increased at every tick of the clock.
I crawled over to her and tugged at her damp sleeve.
"Sweetie" she said. The smile on her face couldn't hide the pain buried within her.
"Why don't you,be...be a good little boy and...and...and go...go...to bed
hmm? If you go now, mummy will read you a story." The shaky tones of her voice, should have been an indication of what she feared; but I thought she was playing, I thought it was a game.
"No!" i laughed,"i wanna play, i wanna play with you mummy"
The soft expression on her face melted away.
"GO.TO.BED!" The cold edge to her voice was unfamiliar, I'd only heard that frightening tone from my hero.Daddy.
BANG.BANG.BANG.
Mother's body, started speaking in a tongue ,that i was not particularly fluent in.
"He's back" she whispered and sighed deeply.
Her hands quivered, as she bit her lip.
BANG.
Her eyes closed.
BANG.
"Go to..to.to.bed. Danny please Just go." Tears violently fell from her eyes.
BANG. BANG.
Her body jolted at every Bang at the door.
I stood there.Completely still. I sucked my thumb, unable to figure out what's taking place.
Its only Dad, i thought to myself. Why's she scared?, Why do i have to go to bed? and why's Dad banging at the door?
"Mummy! whats happening?" i cried
she shook her head, unable to utter even a sentence.
BANG.BANG.BANG.BANG.
The banging was more aggressive. Faster and Faster, Louder and Louder.I covered my ears, while water cascaded down my crimson cheeks.
Mum ran and scooped me in her arms. I clung to her like a blanket.
"shhhh.Baby its okay." She rocked me, as my Father continued to Bang and Grunt.
i could feel her tears fall on me like rain.
"I love you baby." She sighed again "just please go to..."
A gust of wind delivered an unearthly chill to my front room.
although i was still in my Mothers arms i could not feel her.Her soul was carried by the Zephyr and i laid in the arms of her shell.
"ANGELA!" the wind grunted.
I knew that voice, It was "Super Dads" voice.
The southern drawl and unmistakable aroma of "Southern Comfort" radiated the room with its demonic presence.
Mum dropped me and rose to her feet trembling with every step she made towards the newly erect pillar of rage in my front room.
"yes.yes.. hunni" she swallowed, and narrowed her eyes with bitterness.
"WHAT KEPT YOU SO LONG!"
[silence.] Her eyes fell towards the floor.
"ANGELA?" Father turned a deep scarlet.
"I...I. was with..with Dan..Daniel" she glanced back at me while my Fathers built figure towered over her trembling frame.
Then came That silence. A silence that measures a 1000 decibels yet nothing emits a sound.
