Title: Looking back

by Grace from Cornwall | in writing, poetry

Children,
The pitter-patter of tiny feet,
Angelic faces, smiling and sweet,
Loud, amusing and highly indiscrete!

Once had we, pitter-pattering-feet,
But what if our clothes had had to be clean and neat?
What if the toffee apples weren't so sweet?
Would childhood have been quite such a treat?

What if Jack had not exchanged beans for his cow?
But instead had settled for only one pound?
Looking back on childhood,
What would we think now?

What if our biggest problem was not our grazed knees?
What if we weren't so easy to please?
What if we were mocked and teased?
Would we have been at total ease?

What if childhood was an uphill struggle?
And all we needed was a kiss and a cuddle,
And the answers to the who's whats and hows?
What would we think now?
What would we think now?

I don't really know, it's just about how people always think of childhood as sweet but its not always is it?
