Title: The One

by Katie from Scotland | in writing, fiction

As I ran my heart rate doubled, my chest heaved and my stomach ached. I knew my knees were about to buckle but I couldn't stop running .. If I did they would get me. I felt like the Gazelle on the discovery channel being chased by the cheetah. The Cheetah is the fastest animal in the world and the Gazelle was just its victim.
How had this happened? I had gone from a normal schoolgirl to a wanted adventure girl.

....

'Oh my god Rebecca, you are actually the dumbest person I know'
I replied jokily as Rebecca asked me who the president of America was. We were sitting in Modern Studies and listening to Mr Hart rant and rave about the USA and the election there.
I did enjoy the subject but the prospect of that teachers droning voice didn't exactly please me.
Rebecca whispered sternly,
'I just forgot, ok?'
As I opened my mouth to reply, the school bell rang.
I packed away my stuff and put on my jacket happily.
'You still staying at my house, Leanne?'
I heard a familiar voice and turned round to see my friend Alexandra.
I nodded and waved 'see you later then'

This Friday had started out like every other but little did I know, it was to end very, very differently.

I walked to Alexandra's house at nine o'clock. We talked for a while, went on msn and then we watched Punk'd on MTV. Her parents were visting her gran in Wales for the whole week so she and her brother had the house to ourselves.
We were lying in her bed when we got to talking again.
'Lee, don't you think its kinda scary being in the house on our own? I wish my brother was here''
I cut in,
'It'll be ok, and if your brother were here, he would be trying to scare us anyway'
I attempted to sound sure even though I was a little sceptical as well. Alex just yawned in approval and then after about fifteen minutes dozed off to sleep. I didn't.

I heard a door slam downstairs, I thought I was hallucinating. Don't be silly Leanne, the doors are locked, you must be imagining it.
I tried to reassure myself I was dreaming or at least come up with some plausible explanation but I couldn't so I went to investigate. I know you must be thinking 'what an idiot, she must be crazy' and you' eight about that. I walked straight into a trap.

As I crept downstairs, my hands trembled and I bit my lip childishly. I walked into the kitchen and turned on the light '' I felt hands grab me and I tried to scream but I'd been gagged.
I saw that the backdoor was open so I wrestled free of their grip, grabbed my shoes and ran.
This is where I started my little story - running away from unknown enemies with nowhere to hide and no chance of escape.
.....

My running speed began to drop and tears streamed down my face. I can't let them get me, I can't let them get me. I chorused those lines over and over again in my head.
Suddenly I fell, and everything went black.

I woke up in what looked to be an abandoned warehouse of some sort. It was so cold and the ground was dusty and uncomfortable.
A boy walked over and sat in a chair across from me. He was about the same height as me, with blonde spiked hair and green eyes. He looked confident as he grinned evilly at me.

'So, I guess you're wondering why you're here and who the hell I am '' No don't answer I'll just explain to you'
I glared at him but remained silent as I listened to his calm voice.
'You've probably always wondered why you have that birth mark on your back: it looks kind of like a bird''
My face flooded with recognition.
'You've been spying on me you little perv'
The boy just laughed.
'Yeah I did but we already know about the birthmark, everybody does and they are all looking for you, Leanne'
'How do you know my name and who's looking for me? Why?' I wasn't aware of how frantic I sounded.
'Calm it girl, and let me finish. You're the chosen one and that's why we've taken you, that's why everyone wants you and that's why you have the mark.'
I just nodded, I was numb with shock and I couldn't even talk. My head was buzzing with questions, I had so many to ask about this whole chosen one thing but at the moment I only had one major question that demanded an answer.
'Are you going to kill me?' I asked him.
'Not if you're a good girl and do what you're told, but be warned Leanne, it doesn't matter to them if you're dead or alive. Either way they can still gain your power'
He walked out and left me there tied to a beam in that cold warehouse '' To be continued.

It is just a taster of a story based on a dream I had.
