Title: I can see

by hk from Devon | in writing, poetry, story-telling

I can see

Read out to the class she says;
I stumble, I mutter, I moan.
It’s simple she says, while eyes bore down,
Daring the gibberish pressed to the roof of my mouth, to wriggle free,
And coat the stagnate air in mirth, red shame.
But can’t they see, I don’t want to be in here, stifled by the simplicity before me,
Sweet summer wafts, curling his fingers, whispers of salt and sand,
Glancing the plain walls of my current prison, sunbeams wander,
All the while dark shapes flit in clear blue, singing of freedom.

Focus, block out the bored shuffle, incessant tapping,
A meld of words spins an intricate lock, hiding their meaning,
Come on, just spit it out. Are you stupid? Can’t you see?
Eluding me understanding tinkles in joy, blinded I’m left gasping in the dark,
Short-comings to make up for, the mind selects another gear.
Visions of luscious green, frosting rocky outcrops, appear on blank faces,
Movie moment, the world spins around me and arms out stretched,
Transported on high Tors, bolstered by whipped winds;
I shout, I scream, I see.

Reality is complicated, a dictatorship of words,
Frogmarched back to the judging silence, imagination has bailed, left alone,
A ticking clock matches my own rabbit heart, beat for beat.
Deep breath, try again, as calm descends the letters falter mid pirouette
Stilled the beauty of language is evident, and I can do no justice,
Someone else’s words stain the page, ingrained in yellowed tome,
But tongue excited by tentatively hooked knowledge, ignores clumsiness
Plundering on, struggling to weave stuck magic and show in clarity,
That I can see.
