BT developing a new balancing act

BT has announced that they are for laptops that removes the need for a keyboard or a mouse.

Called BT Balance, the device is a small USB adaptor that looks little bigger than a memory stick and has been developed as part of BT's Age and Disability Research programme. It uses a similar technology to detect motion as the Nintendo Wii that lets you swing the remote control like a pretend tennis racket or light sabre. This 'accelerometer chip' can convert motion into instructions to change on-screen content. So, for example, a combination of movements might allow you to open MS Word from a menu, click on an icon on the desktop, or answer a Skype call.

When I first heard about this, I had my reservations. I wasn't sure about being on a busy train and swinging your laptop around as if swatting imaginary flies. The suggest that the motion required to use it is not that dramatic, however. BT Balance promises to offer a useful solution to the awkward nauture of laptop mice, something that many user groups will benefit from.
