Testing tunes...

Bryan Burnett | 20:04 UK time, Tuesday, 1 May 2012

Brilliant mix of music tonight folks - one of the best in ages. There were so many gems that we had the honour of dusting down for tonight's show. Always good to go with the unexpected and The Red Guitars was a great example of this. It was really nice to get a good reaction to something that most people are not familiar with.

Tomorrow is a chance to show off your musical knowledge - then again that could be the case most nights. As we are in the middle of exam season I want you to impress me with an interesting fact about your song of choice. Musically, you can ask for what you want all you need to do is prove you know something the rest of us don't.

The cover version by Them is okay, but I prefer Lulu's original.

Jeez... I've already quoted a few factoids on this show...

He's written the music for several children's television shows including the Rug-rats, and the theme song for the Super Mario World TV series. He's a producer.
Is also known for his music in video games including Crash Bandicoot series and The Sims, also composed "Having Trouble Sneezing", for the "Get a Mac" commercials for Apple Inc.

Nae luck SG as Them recorded it first. Marie "Lulu" McDonald then covered it and this version was rush released which made Them lead singer "Van The Man" become more angry than Glen Miller and become a recluse for 60 years. Only 10 to catch up on Glen....

Let's not forget the first released recording of Wild Horses by

Some people think that Gram Parsons couldnae' carry a tune in a bucket, but such things are subjective and, in this case, irrelevant.

    Please Sir!

Did you kain that Bob Dylan played in the (early) Bobby Vee band?

OK, maybe you did. How's about this then:

Donovan once owned the island of Isay which is situated in Loch Dunvegan between Mingay and Clett of Skye.

Gonny play Remember the Alamo from the album Catch the wind

I'm shocked & stunned! Don't shoot the messenger.

Besides, it would make a nice change from the Rolling Stones' cover...

Kate Bush found out that she shared her birthday with Emily Bronte, both being born on the 30th of july. So she thought to herself, if she can write Wuthering Heights then so can I.

Had she been born on 11th december her first hit would have been called 'one day in the life of Ivan Denisovic'

    Hello Bryan, Blogotariat.....

Fans of Warren ZEVON were bereft in 2008 when he breathed his last after fighting a form of cancer linked to asbestos. But in ZEVON's case, pathologists concluded that what triggered cancer was a vaccine he received in infancy. I cannot explain any further simply because I am no medical doctor. Putting things this way is bringing more fuel to the fire of some religious groups or associations who object to jabs but I do certainly do not share their views.

I suggest 'Dirty life and time' or 'Rub me raw' _ Album: 'The Wind'

Friendly greetings to all from Chris.

for this experiment you will need.

    (1) any ol' river

    (2) 2 pieces of very long string

    (3) a crow (preferably trained)

    (4) scientific calculator

    now do this................

find the source of a river and with one of the pieces of string start to follow the river, all its contours all its twists and turns every bend so that the piece of string is the exact shape of the river, right to a predetermined agreed point at the mouth of the river. ( if its the clyde it could be that sugar boat that sits bottoms up near helensburgh) call that river length 1.

now go to the exact same source of the river and place the second piece of long string in the crow's mouth and give it clear instruction to fly, 'as the crow flies', to the sugar boat sitting bottom up in the clyde (remind the crow not to drop the string!! lol). call that river length 2.

you should now have 2 very long pieces of string. 'river length 1' and 'river length 2'

take the scientific calculator and enter 'river length 1' divided by 'river length 2' and press enter..............

what i didn't tell you was that i secretly got other math interns round the world to do this experiment at precisely the same time on each of the following rivers....thames, nile, missourri, amazon, indus, ganges, yellow river, seine, the tay and let's not forget the dee!!!.....

and as each pressed the ENTER key on their calculator an amazing thing happened......

3.14159265 appeared on all of their calculators.

(i carried out this experiment before the days of mobiles , fax machines, telephones, smoke signals so there was no conferring basically, before any pedants question the integrity of the process)

as if that's enough to get your song played.

    experiment number 2.

look on the front of the 'daily record' (not my rag of choice, i'm a newspaper snob) and find the bit at the top where it tells you today's date.....

    252012 which is today, right?

now, should you be at all interested you can find this string of digits at location 213,806 buried within the many digits if 'pi' (its ok people i was up early double checking the position, i count quickly, its a family thing,ma maw used tae go to the bingo every friday).

    what, still underwhelmed?

which famous scientist whose name is synonymous with being 'VERY BRAINY' (that's a clue) has his birthday on the same day as this number.......

march 14 which is of course 3.14 = einstein's birthday!!!! (you didn't know that?)

people i have never tried this hard to get my song played so i would like to finally say.............

i hope every school pupil sitting standard grade maths today gave it their best shot and for all those who still have 3 weeks to study for their 'higher maths', keep your pencils to the grindstone and switch the mobiles off while your revising.

ok that should do it, surely.

    'pi'........kate bush

oh, and finally, derren brown.....get some new tricks, your slow , man.

oh, and finally, you can find your own date of birth, phone number (don't tell the hackers though), the share price of tescos!! , buried somewhere in the darkest places in 'pi'.

finally, seriously, how about a GIO day oot on the 3.14 from glesga central and somedee gets dared to go up to the buffet carriage and ask ...'ye goat any pi's big chap' and see if you get a response....you will too....'that'll be 拢3.14 (rounded) if you please'.

cheers frae the dale (who is going to have 3.14 circuits of the park, and its no even circular)

if you had done a couple of dozen rivers and used a different crow for each one .....

Well known that Ringo did voice work on Thomas the Tank Engine, perhaps not as widely known that was the music was written by Junior Campbell, ex-Marmalade.

Song said to be about his relief at finally doing his own stuff. Think this song still stands up today and if re-released would probably be a hit, additional bit of trivia Doris Troy sang backing vocals on it.
