Flo Rida ft. T-Pain - 'Low'

Flo RidaDo you know, it took me about three weeks to realise this fella's name is a pun on the word Florida? It's not even really a pun, it's just the word Florida with a space in it, and I STILL didn't spot it. Also, it's already a hit, so there's probably not much point in me casting an opinion into the abyss, for fear of being a) consciously irrelevant, b) deliberately provocative. The first is kind of soul-destroying, and the second is even worse. Settle down, chickabiddies, and I'll tell you for why...

Being deliberately provocative is usually the kind of thing you'd get from some inflated 'shock-jock' from your local talk radio station. You know the formula, you take an issue which is current, complicated, and emotive, and then explain how it is easy to solve it, if only *The Politicians* would *Listen* to *Common Sense*. The solution is usually pretty wrong-headed and inflammatory, crushing civil liberties left and right and pandering to vengeance over wisdom, but will please a vast majority of people who are in no way affected by the situation in the first place, beyond being *Tax Payers* and *Voters*.

It's a funny game, and like any combative sport, it follows strict rules of engagement. Shock-jock takes a call from someone who disagrees with him, Shock-jock slams caller for being stupid, and then there's a frantic scramble for the moral high ground, as Shock-jock and his caller attempt to out-do each other as to who can be more offended on behalf of whoever *The Victim* is.

Then there's a break, like the gaps between rounds in boxing, and Shock-jock takes a call from someone who agrees with him, and may even be MORE furious and sneering about the situation as he is. This makes Shock-jock look like he has managed to come up with the perfect compromise, and is actually wise after all. Never mind that the caller who agrees with him hasn't left the house for three years for fear of being attacked by communist aliens with telepathic powers, a middle-ground position has been struck, and suddenly Shock-jock appears to have the wisdom of Solomon.

After this, his position appears to have been confirmed, and he can bat away any other protests with ease, as if the problem has been solved for all time, rather than just shouted about in an impotent way on the radio. In a way, it's similar to blogging, except bloggers, by and large, don't believe they can change the world (Perez is clearly an exception).

I only mention all this because the other thing I found out once the pun had become clear is that Flo Rida's album is called 'Mail On Sunday'*, a newspaper whose editorial sometimes comes across like a Shock-jock rant, only with a free Catherine Cookson DVD.

Coincidence or conspiracy? YOU BE THE JUDGE...!
