In CD Review's Building a Library on Saturday, critic Richard Wigmore recommends Colin Davis and the Concertgebouw Orchestra's 1977 recording of Haydn's last symphony, on the Philips Duo label as the most satisfying performance available. If you follow the link you can listen again if you missed it. The performance can be heard complete on R3 on Monday's Classical Collection at 11.30 am. The 'London' gets performed a lot. My nearest favourites in that great series of 12 works are No 99 and No 103 (The Drumroll). Anyone have any other suggestions?
From Monday, it's Haydn's turn to be Composer of the Week, with Donald Macleod. I shall be listening to Monday's extract from the opera [The desert island]. I hope Donald plays the finale of Part 2, which shows Haydn developing the idea of progressive operatic ensembles well before Mozart.
Then on Wednesday at 10.34am the Radio 3 parade of Haydn symphonies reaches on Wednesday 21st in Sarah Walker's Classical Collection. The symphony is the first of three [Nos 6,7,8] that use the times of day {Morning, Noon & Night] to create a trilogy of symphonies - an idea suggested by Haydn's
new employer, . Cannily, Haydn accepts his
patron's idea, and at the same time gives delightful solos to many of the players, and so quickly gains their loyalty and goodwill. Well worth hearing.
