A wheel falls off

Graham Smith | 14:14 UK time, Monday, 8 November 2010

Cornwall Labour Party has quit the "Keep Cornwall Whole" campaign.

"It is very obvious to us that the idea that this is a cross party campaign is dead in the water," says the press release.
"In the Labour Party, we feel very strongly that we can achieve more by holding Cornwall's MPs to account than by providing a smokescreen behind which they vote with their parties and against Cornwall. Political responsibility for the 'Dornwall' seat when it comes will lie squarely with the Tory/Lib Dem coalition and it is our role as the opposition to expose this, not collude in excusing it.
"Given the coalition's majority in the House of Commons and in the unelected House of Lords, it is going to be very difficult for Labour to amend or defeat the Bill but we will not give up. We wish the Lib Dem and Tory supporters in Cornwall, who are genuinely opposed to the Bill the best of luck in trying to persuade their MPs and peers to vote against the party line. Cornwall Labour Party continues to work with our colleagues at Westminster and our fight now moves to the Lords. People from all parties are welcome to join us."

I think the use of whips is abused, but given the PM's stance on this issue not surprising.

I believe Labour walked away from the "Keep Cornwall Whole" campaign, because they believed it was "discredited group"

And what a great wheel is was, I am still perpexed how and why the Cornish Labour Party was unable to get Ed Miliband amongst 27 others to vote for the crucial Keep Cornwall Whole amendment that was part of Charles Kennedy's amendment. Were they ever really seriously opposed to Devonwall?
If they were a serious opposition in Westminster they would have used the said amendment to defeat the government by all of the parliamentary party backing it, which they failed to do. It has come to light that the pro-Cornwall amendment was the nearest the government has come to being outvoted in the Commons. Yet the Labour leader couldn't be bothered to vote either way. I appreciate that the Labour party has done a lot in principle to oppose the bill but much like Cornwall's coaliton MPs when it comes to the crunch they shy away.

Jude Robinson of Cornwall Labour emailed me last week about this and I interviewed her on my Radio programme this morning. It is Labour's view that the Tories and Lib Dems have combined to play political games contrary to the wishes of the people of Cornwall which is wholeheartedly against 'Devonwall'. Jude is attending a meeting of Labour Peers and Crossbenchers in the Lords where it is hoped that this proposal can be 'kicked into the long grass'. Certainly Lord Strathclyde, Tory Leader in the Lords is aware of the strength of feeling against 'Devonwall'.

No surprise there, isn鈥檛 this what politicians do? Labour are no different, just putting a different spin on it at this particular time in the 鈥減olitical games鈥

I just wanted to point out that the reason some Labour MPs were not there is because they were 'paired' with Conservative MPs who also could not/did not attend. It is a well known procedure to accommodate MPs who need to be somewhere else. Their 'pair' on the opposite side is also absent, so the outcome of the vote is not affected.
Other than that, Labour MPs voted against the Bill, as did Plaid Cymru and SDLP.

Thank you for that Jude, much appreciated.

Labour in Cornwall, fighting for One MK Kernow. Reminds me of Hawker's Hut and the amazing Robert Stephen Hawker who no matter what he did was never accepted as part of the club, day after day alone in hut guarding the coastline.

    And shall Trelawny live?
    And shall Trelawny die?
    Here's twenty thousand Cornish men
    Will know the reason why!

Lets close the borders now and stop the likes Hawker invading our shores

First good thing Labour has done for Cornwall, pulling out of the sham partnership which is not supported by the greater majority in Cornwall, they had a "picnic by the bridge" funded by the tax payer and gave the nats a chance to wear the flags n kilts and get drunk, in the end confirming the majority are not as bigoted as the few

Maybe if the "Keep Cornwall Whole" campaign had been more honest, and not had so many untruths on their website about "changing Cornwall's historic boundary", as if the map of Cornwall was going to be redrawn, when they damned well knew it was not, then they'd have attracted greater support.

No one wants to support a campaign, after they find out they've been sold a pig in a poke.

    "changing Cornwall's historic boundary",

Shhhhhhh you are letting the cat out of the bag and repeating what we have been saying for months, but Mike seems to be claiming centre stag encouraged by the usual C24 suspects

I think Dave has summed it perfectly with the "changing Cornwall's historic boundary" comment add to this the use of the term Devonwall, which smacks of bigotry, the use of Devonwall drove away support
