How can the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú compare a caption competition to their breaching of phone in competitions? It's bloody pathetic!!!
Please bring back the CC soon as my thursdays will never be the same again!

How ridiculous that this diktat be applied to a competition where no money or payment in kind is involved in entering or winning. This does nothing to enhance licence payers' confidence in the "judgement" of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú!

    Good grief, really?

I should imagine the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Trust will enjoy going through several year's worth of caption competitions to check for any element of bias or favouritism!

Hang on a minute - are you telling me the caption contest winners have been staged as well? No wonder I've never won it!

OK, I can understand "prize" competitions being suspended, until all Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú staff have completed their "how to run competitions ethically" course, but what possible harm can come from an online, no prize (apart from bragging rights) light hearted, bit of fun "competition". Suggest you remove the "Competition" and call it "Caption Submissal Mechanism Thingy" - that should be OK....

Shame! I can understand competitions with premium phone lines being stopped, but a harmless bit of fun like this, which pulls in hundreds of entries a week at no cost to the entrant, with no prize other than kudos? Mad.

  7. At 10:29 PM on 19 Jul 2007, PaulH wrote:

How silly... the Caption Comp costs nothing to enter, had no real winner, did no-one any harm at all. No comparison with rip-off phone lines cheating kids out of prizes.

Because the Caption Comp was basically just, er, sending a comment about a picture, does that mean that all MM comments are now to be suspended also?

Fix the real problems, Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú, don't spoil harmless fun.

Well, as I'm not phoning, and don't expect to win anything, I'll enter anyway...

OK MM, isn't it time for a clear statement from you to say you've never been involved in any subterfuge? Therefore, and because of the distinct lack of value of kudos, why can't the online competitions be reinstated?

Has the distribution of prizes also been suspended?

N.B. This is not an entry and should be returned to the above address if unopened.

The Invisible Man had never done that before with the Invisible Woman.

There has to be a way round this. Couldn't you publish the best comments about the lack of a Caption Competition (anonymously, of course). Then you could have a mini-quiz to guess which of your regular contributors sent in the best comment. That should do it!

For goodness sake, don’t leave us with just ‘Have your Say’. They are angry angry people, and rather scary..

The suspension of the caption competition, shows, as I suspected, that my captions weren't winning because Stig was a member of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Top Gear programme.

Surely this is leg-pulling by MM? And how does the DMQ stay, but this not?...

Of course on this sort of basis, the letters should be pulled too since far too many people see that as a comp to get more and more published... or be the last of the week!

If I can't enter the caption comp then I better get my entry fee back.

    Small unmarked £10 notes please

    Hang on.............

Does that mean the my number 1 position in the comp Posted Friday, 8 June 2007 was faked?

    I didn't really win??

ohh the shame of it all.

How am I going to tell my mum it was all a lie and I didn't really get position 1 after all.....

If the caption competition was running (which it isn't) then a good photo would be the one of the seagull stealing the Doritos from the shop in Scotland. Maybe viewers could let us know what their captions would have been had this been the photo (which it is isn't). My caption is (or isn't) "these shops are so gullible".

Elsewhere on the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Newssite you are still running a competition to find the best Harry Potter Summary in under 100 words - so why no caption competition ?

This is a stupid, stupid decision. I can't express in words the contempt I feel for the person who made this stupid, stupid decision.

The problem with the premium rate phone scams was that you had to pay to enter the competition.

You dont have to pay to enter the caption competition. Well not in cold hard cash anyway.

I think this gives us carte blanche to declare a non-Competition open on the entire site, ladies and Gentlemen. I hereby suggest that by simply publishing our observations on the unusual angles of life, we may yet relieve the readership of the crushing weight of bureaucracy. To aid the moderators, perhaps we should head our letters, Re: Not the caption competition.

So how come there's still a daily mini quiz, which has just as much of a prize (nothing)? Not that I want rid of the mini quiz, you understand; I just want the CC back (and Punorama which is presumably going the same way).

Hmmm - I think MM senses that this is perfect cover for not having to source a captionabe pic, and gives more time to devote to porridge eating...

    You made me cry.

Hope you are satisfied. Even though I am appallingly bad at the puns and the captions, lord knows I've tried.

My heart is sinking deeper and deeper into the morass that the gap of these competitions do not fill.

I would cancel my subscription but I have no subscription to cancel and would have nothing to do at work otherwise.
