Breakfast in Beijing

Nick Robinson | 00:08 UK time, Friday, 18 January 2008

We have just landed in China to hear the news that the "serious incident" we witnessed at Heathrow was much, much more serious than it looked from our vantage point on the prime minister's plane.

Speaking on the tarmac in Beijing the prime minister has paid tribute to the calmness and professionalism of the BA staff and captain.

Glad to hear that you're safe Nick. Oh, and Gordon too.

Following the comments on your previous entry, I trust you had your Balckberry set to "offline" during the flight.

I would agree Nick, that a situation with potential for great disaster seems to have been thankfully avoided, and with the injuries to the passengers and crew being so relatively light, I think we all need to appreciate the actions of both the pilot, and the cabin crew in this particular instance.. their professionalism, and prompt evacuation of the aircraft, certainly appear to have been the key points of the entire event itself, along with the emergency services... and I can only applaud their actions right now....well done to everyone involved.

I live and used to work under the flight path of that plane. A few seconds earlier and it could have flattened business, ruined housing estates or smashed into one of the primary schools that it just managed to miss.
THIS IS JUST ONE REASON WHY LONDONERS DO NOT WANT A THIRD RUNWAY BUILD OR A MASSIVE INCREASE IN RUNWAY USAGE.
Next time we might not be so lucky.

What a pity Gordon's trip to China was not cancelled as so many other flights were. It would have been seen as poetic justice for the cancellation of the planned trip by several MP's to Beijing in early November, directly affected by his indecision over whether to call a "snap" general election.

Does the prime minister use a private aircraft or does he actually fly commercial?

Does Mr Brown know the cause of the accident? I fear he may be somewhat premature in his praise.

Congratulations on your safe landing in Beijing. Much importance seems to be places on Humand Rights when British politicians discuss China, but do we honestly have any right to preach to China about human rights when so many are being eroded and evaded by our government in the UK and other countries in the west?

Also i noticed that Richard Branson has gone along with the PM on this visit, is it possible they could be trying to thrash out details on Northern Rock more than Branson's interests in business in China?

Hope the weather is better there than it is here in the United Kingdom!
