So what?

They're finished anyway. No electorate is going to carry on supporting a party that taxes the poorest people in the land - regardless of hand outs.

If they can afford £100bn to bail out Northern Rock they can afford to reverse this policy; if they really can't afford it we are all finished.

Therein lies the rub

I think Gordon's missing the point here. He can persuade as many Labour MPs as he likes that everything is going to be fine but they aren't the electorate, are they? Alistair Darling promises that 'something' will be done this (financial) year - but that means he's got until 31st March 2009!
I think Labour have been a busted flush for a long, long time but I haven't heard anything from the other parties that convinces me that they'll be any different.
They're rubbish and we're doomed!

I'm not sure I'd call this a u-turn or victory. There's scope for a deal but if it's just the flaring of egos it will backfire. These things always do. The most important lessons of strategy and being in touch would usefully be developed, and that may require some patience.

The low wage economy is a problem but bullying, rude, and selfish Britain has to realise that business and society plays its part as well. Unless business leaders invest in the bottom and neighbours care for each other a positive consensus will never be reached.

And there's lessons for the opposition parties here. The Conservatives need to quit propping up the CBI whose business vision has nearly wrecked the country, and the Liberals need to get over the passive-anger driven finger wagging. Anything less is just more ego.

As per some of the other postings, the "solution" that GB ends up creating will be irrelevant as far as the voters are concerned.

The problem that the voters have (apart from having their money stolen) is that a PM never understood the basic logic/maths of a very simple situation, either that or he simply doesn't care that he stole essential money from people on the breadline, either way people absolutely despise him for it.

Whatever the solution is, the root problem is still there; a PM who doesn't understand maths, logic, economics, or people.

IF he knows about money , then he knew this would happen as soon as he thought it up .

This "so called" government are a bunch of absolute incompetents. Does it take a year to see that a total cods has been made of the budget? The major problem is that Brown has been desperate for the premiership for so long and now he has (as has the poor electorate) found out he is completely useless at the job.

Sorry to to go off on a side track here, but am I the only individual who is beginning to question Nick Robinson's netrality whilst reporting political news?

Over the past few months it appears we are ever increasingly seeing his relatively smug looking face at the end of every report when he's had a go at Gordon Brown.

Please don't misread this as a solid defence of the PM however, being an 18 year old i haven't sold my soul to any party as yet. What i am objecting to though is this common theme of vitriolic attacks by press against certain politcians.

I come to expect this from The Daily Mail and Telegraph but from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú I do have to object. So please Nick, just stop looking so happy all the time when talking about politicians downfalls- its making me a bit sick now and just lowering the standard of news we recieve from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú.

Phew. Rant over.

Nothing gets through to a politician quicker than the fear of defeat.
