The Beach
What is the Beach?
It’s a place to go when the stresses of your real life need relieving. Sometimes it is fairly quiet and you might feel like you’re the only one around, but you can leave your ‘footprints’ for others to find later on. Othertimes it is the home for a real party, with constant gossip, leg-pulling, rumour, innuendo, chit-chat and weirdness.
If this were a forum (and it sort of is because we post responses to each other, not just to Eddie, hence our term for ourselves 'Froggers', a combination of forum and blogger) then the beach would be the off-topic area.
It's a tropical location, no matter the time of year it's always warm and pleasant there.
Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, the evenings balmy. It has a number of different locations; the Nick Clarke waterfront bar; the smokers corner; Fido's Run for the dog-walkers; the Naughty Step and many others.
How do you find your way around? There is no direct answer to the question.
The beach is a moveable feast, literally. It will be renewed by our Lord and master Mr. Edward de Mair each Friday morning. This is because we have found in the past that when the number of posts exceeds about 600 the entire thing becomes unwieldy and unstable. A case of the beach turning to quicksand.
Froggers often leave bottles / glasses / trays of their favourite tipple on the bar for others to sample, not to mention big / small eats.
There is a herd of camels who frequent the sands, which froggers are very fond of. There are sun-loungers, so you can take it easy and catch some rays. Quite often the late-night attendees will have a barbie.
It's a fun place, with only one real rule; Be nice to each other; we are ALL chums here. New Froggers are ALWAYS welcome.
The real debate happens on the other threads. The beach is a place for banter, whimsy, relaxation and friendship, where jarring comments are not particularly welcome. There are certain very mild protocols, which you tend to pick up as you go along. So slip your shoes off, feel the sand between your toes, relax and enjoy yourself.

Spent a loooong day chairing difficult meetings today ... well, actually, chairing difficult people in meetings ... well, actually, chairing one difficult person in several meetings. But in a worthwhile cause.
Finally slumping in a nice comfy hammock, with a delicious g&t ... I feel as if I've earned it.
Last night SO and I explored our abilities to make music with an accordion, piano and electric keyboard ... finally ended up back with the guitar as usual. Ho hum!
If anyone has long fingers (or just big hands generally) I am happy to show them how the accordion works .. I understand it but just can't REACH!!!

Well done to all on exams and readings out (the only bit of PM I caught, and at the time thought that Aperitif will be on Cloud 9 this evening); happy birthdays etc to those having them (the date of mine is a state secret, I'll happily admit to an age greater than mine, as I accidently did last week).
Fifi, my one and only experience with a piano accordion was to wheeze out the Captain Pugwash theme very slowly (unused to the button scheme for the left hand). But that was better than what the owner could do (why did he buy the thing?). I do rather better with a harmonium.
Limped the car home this evening with string and sealing wax (well, a little more substancial than that) solution. (Was underneath for most of PM). Consequently I ache in odd places, so if you don't mind I'll recharge my glass and slump out in a hammock to recover. I was proud of my record of always getting the car home whatever happened to it, until this car, when twice now I've had to get the call-out guys in - damned if I'm going to give the car third time lucky.

So, I have left a selection of nibbles on the bar for the evening's festivities: nachos, tortillas, crisps, nuts (warning: these may contain nuts) and a whopping selection of crackers and cheeses.

Well I've just been singing at a wedding and I see I've missed the best of the Pedalo Olympics! Stewart M has won gold in the slalom (around the camels, who were treading water) and anth won a bronze in the freestyle. If it hadn't been for toppling over during that 'wheelie' at the end it'd have been a gold!
Unfortunately Nicki Noodle was disqualified for holding a cocktail in an innappropriate place....
The wedding we sang at was hilarious. Mrs Overall was playing the organ and we had the 'Status Quo' version of Wagner's wedding March - with only 2 chords underneath - and a bargain free extra verse in one of the hymns, which she ploughed her way through (with chorus) despite the fact that no-one was singing any longer.
One piece we were singing had 6 flats (= lots of black notes!) most of which she chose to ignore, leaving us singing semitone clashes more reminiscent of Shoenberg than Rutter, and she added several trick extra beats to our last piece, just to see if we were listening.
I spent the whole thing trying desperately not to catch the conductors eye as his shoulders were shaking with laughter (lucky him - he had his back to the bride & groom!) and I was about to corpse!
Anyone for Pimms? The sun's almost out so it must be time for it....

I've just met some very agreeable people and had a good talk, so am set up for a quiet but happy evening. In July, that is. But while I'm here, and in honour of two days without rain (!!!) here's a jug of Sangria, one of home-made lemonade, and some salads. Should go well with Fifi's nibbles.

I'm supposed to be learning music for tomorrow so haven't been to the shops. In the fridge - salmon fillets, green beans, the end of a tub of mascarpone, 3 kiwi fruit & several physallis. There's plenty of wine, olive oil, rice & dried pasta. Any ideas on how to combine them into something nutritious & delicious?
The music I'm sposed to be learning is by William Orbit and is a wordless chorus to his first orchestral suite. He apparently wrote it on a keyboard and got someone to transcribe it which means that some bits are practically unsingable.
The concert is tomorrow.....

I'll leave this freshly squeezed juice on the bar and head back to July where I can still see some of the blue sky that was showing when I got up. Lots of mare's tails though now.

The weather is certain to improve in July, if RJD and I are *both* leaving the country. I'm off to Finland shortly, by sea, and I'll be back at the end of the month or a little sooner.

We are back at last after a very late and hugely enjoyable night's singing. And a Moroccan concoction of lamb, chickpeas and couscous that melted in the mouth with so many flavours ... mmmmmm!
There was a tiny bit left, and I was going to ask our hostess if I could save it in a container to bring to the Beach. And then her brother found he could manage 'a tiny bit' more and it was gone!
I see all last night's nibbles have gone then? And is it my imagination or are the camels drying off over there by the palm trees? I didn't know they could swim?

I'm just back from a weekend where SO and I felt like we were entrenched inside the pages of the D**ly M**l newspaper.
My tongue is so sore from being bitten, in the interests of family harmony, that all I can do is lie here sucking ice-cubes til both tongue and sanity are restored to normal.

Evening all. I've recovered from the pedalo races. The 208 km or whatever it was today has tired me out. Mind you should now see me thighs!
Just sorted another quick and easy tea. Pork fillet. 1cm thick slices. Dust with flour and fry in butter for 2 mins, turning often. Add 6 fluid Oz dry white wine and cover abd simmer for 5mins. Seaon and reduce gravy down a bit. Served with mash.
Now got to get eldest daughter out of shower, At almost 7 she now likes a shower instead of a bath some days, But not sure its better for environment. I think she has a bath and a half of water during her shower. Try as I might she won't speed up.
Oh Gillian ... argh. Know exactly what you mean!!! Your tongue will heal, and your family relationships are worth a bit of scar tissue. In the long run. * hug *
Look, Appy has brought some lovely cocktails (all freshly made) and ... has this been made clear? ... nothing one imbibes on the Beach ever seems to affect the liver or the head the next day. It's almost incredible!
While it's still so warm this evening, I'm going to throw caution to the winds and try swimming with those dolphins. The camels are back treading water again (clearly enjoyed it during the pedalo Olympics last night) and it looks like fun.

Do you know that I'm such a lucky frogger? I have 2 teenage daughters and they are a joy! They've been such good company today, I even enjoyed taking number 1 daughter for a driving lesson first thing this morning. How weird is that? I've had a lovely sunday and have just come down to round off a great day by seeing if I can spot any of Pomsaffie's dolphins outlined against the setting sun, whilst enjoying a rather cheeky shiraz. Well, that was a very pleasant and enjoyable weekend back in July. After the Hampton Court Flower Show (which was lovely in a floral kind of way), Mrs Wonko and I made the best of the nice weather and spent most of the weekend in our garden. Pottering mostly.
And what a lot I have to catch up on. Sorry to miss the peddalos, could be one of the few sports left where we have a British World Champion. Congratulations to all those of a Birthday or Degree celebration nature who I've missed.

I've brought some yummy ripe brie and a few loaves of french bread for those who haven't had lunch yet - dig in, do.
I've been battling with a decision I've got to make and just thought of my fellow froggers - you're bound to have views and advice. So, here goes (don't hold your breath - it's not momentus!):
What type of bbq should I buy - gas or charcoal? I have a small party planned for Saturday (SO and best friend both 40) and decided that a bbq was the best option. My feeling is that a gas one will be more convienient for me to light on my own before SO gets home from work (in the future), which is good. But do gas bbq's produce the same flavour or is it just like taking a grill outside?
I'm sure there will be some very firm views held over this - I'm looking forward to them!
P.S. Well done Francis O - wasps can be rather nasty.
Frances, wasps are generally good news and rarely aggressive until they start to get sleepy (or drunk on fruit) in the autumn.
If you really need to trap (and or exterminate) when eating out of doors try a jam jar with sticky stuff - thick orange juice, runny jam etc - with a paper cover over the top with a hole in. Wasps can enter but not exit. It's up to you whether the liquid is enough to drown them or not.
Meanwhile do try some of this cheese and onion tart guaranteed wasp free.

Charcoal (English woodland, sustainable, etc natch) every time. Never seen the point in gas bbqs. Not until you're 70 anyway. What's a bbq unless you end up covered in grime, with tears from the smoke gently washing the smuts from your face. Easy to light if you get one of the Weber kettle ones (other kettle bbqs in sexy colours also available) and if you really want the easy option get bags of instant lighting charcoal which are already impregnated with (probably) carcinogenic lighter fuel. Gas bbqs take away all the risks and are consequently no fun.
There. Suitably trenchant, I hope?

Charcoal (only British lump, not briquettes - check the bag) is best and does give a better flavour. Best to light a normal wood fire first and let it burn down almost to coals, then add the charcoal...
Charcoal briquettes and the readymade one-time sort or 'easy light', etc. are worse than gas, and frequently use material from the destruction of rainforests.
Enjoy the BBQ in any case, and be proud of your accomplishment! I know how rare Firsts are, and rightly so.

Izzy - I got a gas bbq a couple of years ago, its a darn site more convenient and because its quite big its brilliant for entertaining. Its also a lot easier to control the heat if you're cooking different things. But I have to agree with Ed, I don't think the flavour is the same. I also used to enjoy the art of getting the coals to just the right temperature, its not the same just twiddling a knob (if you'll pardon the expression). If its something that you'll want to use quite regularly, perhaps as a last minute sort of thing, go for the gas. Otherwise stick with tradition.
Azzy - don't listen to these people who advocate charcoal - they are living in the past.
Charcoal is OK if you don't mind wasting hours whilst it gets to temperature and subsequently cools down - a real pain if there are any children about. It is also a myth that the charcoal adds any flavour to the food. Charcoal is neutral - any additional flavour is added either to the charcoal by the manufacturers or by the person doing the BBQ.
A gas BBQ is quicker, safer, more convenient, more easily controlled and produces exactly the same flavour. The only extra thing that a charcoal BBQ can supply is a sense of achievement on the odd occasion that you get the thing to light and stay hot long enough to cook the food!

I believe that, like dogs and numerous other creatures, wasps can sense fear (adrenaline or its metabolites, etc) and respond with aggression because nothing is more dangerous than a frightened animal.
I've observed that honeybees don't sting their keepers often, even when (s)he doesn't use smoke, but they have stung me while I was nearby, quivering with fright, and using the smoker....
Wasps can usually be shoo-ed away gently but not aggressively. Aggression will yield an appropriate response. The trapping techniques mentioned above are also quite effective.

One advantage of the charcoal version is that you can add woodchips (plum or cherry sawdust), or rosemary sprigs etc to help add an aroma and perhaps a little extra to the smoky flavour.
However, I was at a BBQ recently where they had a gas one, and it certainly did the job of feeding about 40 people. Also, the cheap charcoal BBQs seem to only survive a season or two.

My two pence on the subject of barbeques:
I prefer (lumpwood) charcoal to brickettes, disposables or gas. As far as I'm concerned gas isn't a barbeque, it's just a hob outdoors.
There is no reason why a properly laid and tended charcoal barbeque cannot cook for a large number of people. As anth has noted, it can also have various materials added to help flavour the food - I like juniper and applewood.

We fed about thirty folk using a BBQ made from a rusty 40 gallon drum in an hour or so, and it'll likely last a good few years. Shelves retrieved from a junkyard fridge work fine, and the cut off half can be placed over as a cover when adding dampened woodchips for extra smoky flavour. Total cost: about one hour with hammer and chisel.
Who needs to spend a fortune at [insert 'DIY' outlet] ?

On holiday I use Charcoal as european weather invariably warmer and dryer so it lights better than back in blighty. At home I'm afraid I've gone gas. It works. I entertained 40 odd at my 40th using the Gas BBQ. 10 years ago I entertained 40 using a kettle BBQ and charcoal. Take your pick both are justified.
Mind if Ed uses an Oil drum BBQ up in Scotland....

Aperitif - I tried to free a wasp from our kitchen at work last week. I couldn't 'shoo' it so instead I tried catching it with a mug & a piece of card.
*Warning - those of a nervous disposition and any officials from the RCVS who witnessed me swearing an oath to protect all animals should look away now .....*
Unfortunately, in the process, I managed to squash the wasp's head against the rim of the mug. As it fell onto the window ledge, I noticed that its' head had come off but was still attached by a very thin white strand, which I now assume was its' spinal cord.
It was still upright, and drumming its' wings. A few seconds later, it gathered its' head in its' front legs and flew across the room! For a second I considered trying to superglue its head back on.. but thought better of it and instead hit it extremely hard with a copy of the Veterinary Record.

The guy who asked about strategies for dealing with the most difficult young people, when they evidently have potential? That was him! He said they're planning to hire the interviewee who had the best singing voice! Is there something we should know?...

July is being a bit itesome isn't it? I haven't had one single journey to or from work this week without some kind of problem. Grrrrrrrrr!
Never mind, here's a large Spanish Tortilla I made (many large beaten eggs; fried potatoes, onions, peppers and peas). Cut yourself a slice and wash it down with some cranberry juice with a splash of Apple Schanpps in it, served over crushed ice.

Goodness! I didn't even know we had a waterfall! I think I'll go and take a shower in it. Lovely :-)
Apertif - You didn't know we had a waterfall? This is a tropical beach location, they all have watefalls. Either that or the shampoo adverts have been lying to me all these years! I guess you've found it by now - it's very invigorating.
Excuse me, I've got to go and water the petunias (and that's not a euphamism for something else!). Then it's home time back in July, Mrs Wonko and I are going to see the new Parry Hotter film tonight (she insisted - other films and methods of entertainment are available). Mrs Wonko's a big fan of the books, I find the films midly diverting but have yet to pick up any of the books - partly through lack of interest, partly through stubborness!
