The Beach
What is the Beach?
It’s a place to go when the stresses of your real life need relieving. Sometimes it is fairly quiet and you might feel like you’re the only one around, but you can leave your ‘footprints’ for others to find later on. Othertimes it is the home for a real party, with constant gossip, leg-pulling, rumour, innuendo, chit-chat and weirdness.
If this were a forum (and it sort of is because we post responses to each other, not just to Eddie, hence our term for ourselves 'Froggers', a combination of forum and blogger) then the beach would be the off-topic area.
It's a tropical location, no matter the time of year it's always warm and pleasant there.
Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, the evenings balmy. It has a number of different locations; the Nick Clarke waterfront bar; the smokers corner; Fido's Run for the dog-walkers; the Naughty Step and many others.
How do you find your way around? There is no direct answer to the question.
The beach is a moveable feast, literally. It will be renewed by our Lord and master Mr. Edward de Mair each Friday morning. This is because we have found in the past that when the number of posts exceeds about 600 the entire thing becomes unwieldy and unstable. A case of the beach turning to quicksand.
Froggers often leave bottles / glasses / trays of their favourite tipple on the bar for others to sample, not to mention big / small eats.
There is a herd of camels who frequent the sands, which froggers are very fond of. There are sun-loungers, so you can take it easy and catch some rays. Quite often the late-night attendees will have a barbie.
It's a fun place, with only one real rule; Be nice to each other; we are ALL chums here. New Froggers are ALWAYS welcome.
The real debate happens on the other threads. The beach is a place for banter, whimsy, relaxation and friendship, where jarring comments are not particularly welcome. There are certain very mild protocols, which you tend to pick up as you go along. So slip your shoes off, feel the sand between your toes, relax and enjoy yourself.

Izzy - I owe you a further apology for not getting in touch. Mrs Wonko decided that we were going to the cinema last night, so I was unable to get on the Interweb. We saw the Simpson's Movie by the way - other cinematic presentations are available - and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Mrs Wonko is not a Simpson's fan, but she still laughed along with me. Warmly recommended.

I'm staying with friends just now, and they don't have internet access. Over dinner we couldn't work out what place "Antigoni" had in greek mythology. My impulse was to 'google' it. But they pulled out a dictionary. Hadn't seen one of those in a long time.
So in keeping with non-googling, I must pass. Though I definitely heard the lyrics before, I can't remember who by.

SHE PASSED! The girl done good! So the upshot is that what with that on top of the fab news she got from the SQA on Tuesday - TD is off to University of her choice, to do course of her choice. They don't know what's about to hit them :o)))

96 posts before the Programme started - haven't checked, but that seems impressive? I'm mortified to admit that I'm going to let the side down, since I'm off to Norn Iron's own lake district for a week with the Peej clan. 4) The right-hand side of my chest has been aching all week...
Background:
In the family's garden, we have a shed at the top right hand side, which used to have a row of Leylandii behind it. Also adjacent to the shed is a patch of sawdust which our dog uses for certain bodily functions. From the shed, a path leads down to the lawn, and on the first bit of lawn we've put a shelf from one of those self-assembly tent-like greenhouse thingies, in an attempt to prevent our dog from scratching all the grass away when she's finished in 'her' area.
Incident:
Sunday afternoon, finished sawing one of the trees down, walking back to the lawn, didn't lift one foot high enough and tripped over the greenhouse shelf. It upended and planted a rather nice looking bruise on my inside left thigh, but the right side of my chest landed quite hard on the (regular) lawn.
Aftermath:
This side of my chest has ached every time I've moved it all week. There's no sign of an external bruise, but that side of my chest is quite painful if poked. If it doesn't improve over the weekend, I'll visit my GP to get it checked out, and a chest X-ray wouldn't go amiss...
5) Before I took my current IT-related career path, I did complete a degree in Biology.
The bizarrest aspect of the course was that I preferred studying plants to animals, cells, biochemistry or microbiology.
Why bizarre? Aroundabout this time of year I stock up on desloratidine and fluticasone proprionate...
Earlier I said it was quiet here ... not a mistake I'll make again.

6) For anyone who's missed it yet...
When I started Uni, I because a fan of a weekly column called the B*stard Operator From Hell (BOFH).
As my course as Biology, and I thought myself slightly eccentric (well, a white coat and dissecting kit were standard issue), when I first entered the online world I chose the nickname mbfh (Mad Biologist From Hell).
Skip forward a few years, and I'm back doing Computer Science. mcsfh doesn't have much of a ring to it, but IT Trainee (mittfh) does.
A year later, the job title changes to IT Technician, but I could craftily keep the same nickname.
And even though my job title is now "Remote Support Engineer", it's still a technical IT role, so mittfh sticks (looks better than mrsefh - which looks too close to a superbug for comfort).

Eventually they left me with only my trusty wooden cased valve radio and the Scottish Home Service for company. Ah, those were the days.

Sadly, the initial flush of enthusiasm couldn't carry me past p 4, and attempts to learn the alphabet phonetically. However, never say never, it's still on my To Do List....

Thanks Big Sister and Anne P for your advice. My original problem was that I was trying to be helpful to mac, who only appeared to have a 1965 Concise Oxford Dictionary. Well, I discovered a little while back that most local authorities subscribe to the OED online (yes, the whole thing) - all you need to do is enter your library card number. I use it all the time.
The problem was (I think) that I put in links to get to OUP. So if you don't use it yet, you'll need to search for it.
Let's see if this gets through ... if it does, I'll try and see if Colin Dexter's word is there and report back ...

Hello all - a quick nip in before I have an afternoon snoze in August. Am knackered after frinds 30th bday party last night (and the travelling a fair few miles to partake of said shenanigans). But I have to confess I did wake up at stupid o'clock this morning and had a slight worry that I'd missed the Big 50k....I even tried to access the frog by my mobile....its very worrying.

Fif- well I'm getting to sound a bit repetitive here but it's the fact that it's all you F people who have asked. You are a yellow too, but you don't have the silvery sheen, you have a kind of orangeish hue. Do you know those flash cars you get with the paintwork that costs something like £200 per litre (perhaps I exaggerate there but I wasn't really listening properly when someone told me about it), go on, you do know the ones I mean, they have a kind of a rainbow effect depending on what direction you're viewing them from? Well that's what happens with my words. There is a base colour, then an overlay depending on - well I'm not sure what it depends on, just the feelings I associate with the word I think. Synesthaesia is a kind of cross-networking of wires in the brain, as I understand it. I do have a colleague who sees arrays of numbers as shapes, so feels really uneasy when there's a mistake in, say a cashflow or something (he's an accountant!)

So, if we count the above as the first of my Pointless Weirdnesses, then No2 is that my paternal grandmother was from Thurso and she had the second sight.

Well, a good time seems to have been had by all. Thanks Val P. for the offer of spare food but we seem to have judged it just about right. However for any hungry froggers, you will find a few leftovers on the bar - rice salad, pastrami & chorizo, a big bowl of strawberries (lovely sweet little ones) and of course some cream, scones with hedgerow jelly and a small amount of birthday cake. Feel free to help finish it off.
RJD thanks for thinking of the chairs, we just about had enough though sons seemed happy sitting on the ground.
And the weather couldn't have been better (sorry Norn Iron) so photos of the ceremony of the benches to come.

I was going to post this and then I decided that it might not be a good idea. But I've told it to the Mother-in-Law and she laughed, so here goes:
I was in court the other day, when suddenly this chap burst in with a big long scarf wrapped around his head and neck. He went quietly but very deliberately and speedily around the courtroom squeezing the breasts of all the females present. He then left as quickly as he had come - and nobody said a word and not one of the courtroom attendants paid any heed to him.
I turned to the Resident Magistrate and said "Who on earth was that and why didn't someone stop him?"
He looked at me and said, "Oh don't worry about that. That's just the muffled titter that sometimes runs around the court"
I've set up a comfy observatory area on the Beach, so we can watch the shooting stars without cricking our necks.
Kindly note the plethora of tartan travelling rugs and windbreaks (no draughts!) laid out on the sand.
Each with mini-bar within arm's reach, and a stock of sweet and savoury snacks.
Only thing you need to watch: some of the camels have their eye on the sausages on sticks ... you know what they're like!

And how can I possibly be malicious with my first posting of the day - well really.....
It's ten hours since I last posted....
Sid: He may well be entitled to, but I prefer people who wear their knowledge lightly, not smugly.
But I like him, and am grateful for Morse, of which I'm a great fan.
One point I would make, though, is while he is undoubtedly an extremely erudite man, and his stories make great reading, I've never been impressed with his literary style. I've read most of the Morse books, because I love the plots, but to me they don't 'flow' like some other, possibly less erudite, authors. Still, if I were him, I wouldn't let it bother me - he's been a huge success, after all!
Now, that's made me want to watch an episode of Morse and one of my greatest TV heroes, John Thaw. Where's the remote, guys?

I wouldn't worry about it, we get the message from time to time, and at seemingly random intervals. It's one of the charms of this place, and keeps you on your toes. mac (331) split screens and multiple windows or tabs in browsers will depend on what kind of computer/operating system and browser you are using. The latest versions of IE and Firefox both allow tabbed browsing which lets you have several webpages open at once. Using Firefox I have bookmarked a group of all the things I like to start up with in the morning - saves a few minutes and having to remember what I need to do.
If you can't do tabbed browsing you can open your browser several times over and switch between. Assuming you are using windows, if you right click on an empty area of the task bar it should give you the option to cascade or tile open windows, though I've never found that very user friendly at least on a small laptop screen.
Of course if you are eponymous mac and not windows at all you'll have to seek help from another frogger it's about a hundred years since I last used one of them.

UptheTrossachs - actually that's one the marvellous things about the Beach. You could wander around in the sun all day (it being a tropical location an' all), but never suffer from even a hint of sunburn. Those of a skinnydipping nature (or who simply wear their speedos on their head instead of the more traditional location) will testify I'm sure.
I'm always up for a dram of the Scottish liquid and frequently leave a bottle of something nice at Nick's - when I'm not cooking that is!

One of the best things about the Beach is that you can take a couple of bars of chocolate with you to go swimming, leave them on your towel, and come back out of the water and find that they haven't melted into the cloth so that you have to suck the chocolate out of it instead of eating. Or to put it another way
On the Beach, a chocolate drink doesn't happen by accident.
My first words here are to recomend 2 books where the sea theme is presented:

Maybe I'm taking it wrong, but you can open two copies of most wordprocessors or simple 'notebook' type text editors and size them to sit side by side or one above another on your screen. This isn't using tabs.
If you're in an internet browsers, try file/new window (alt-f-n on firefox) and you'll have two copies(windows). Then resize (usually beside rupper-right corner close 'x') just click on the 2-2 symbol to get started. You'll figure it out from there. I'm looking at two at the moment - it's that easy.

In case anyone was wondering, I have now decided that when it thinks I'm malicious I shall just go on posting over and over until I get bored. The one that has recently turned up as 357 wasn't ever held for approval, it had been consistently malicious all its short life. Three of its incarnations haven't yet appeared, another has. Such is the Mystery of the Mods.

I've got a copy of the Mozart recorded by the Berlin Phil, under the baton of Karajan, and the Verdi by the LSO and Hiscox. I'd heard nothing but good things about the Verdi but was really disappointed by it. The Mozart is better in every way, most especially the Requiem Aeternum, the Kyrie and the Dies Irae (although Cl*ss*c FM only ever seem to play the Lacrimosa. Turn up the volume and be blown away.
Oh well, just thought I'd ask. Besides, it's another one on the way to 50k.

Phew - my pc shorted out or summat this afternoon and tripped the circuit breaker. Thought it was all a goner! B*gger the work, all I was bothered about was not being able to see if we hit the 50k or not. Fortunately my last act on it had been to email Fifi la Frog. So that was ok then. Don't you just realise how much you rely on it for, well, so much?

I've always found the hammocks to be an excellent place from which to enjoy:
1) Gentle sea breezes
2) A quiet nap
3) A glass of something long and tinkly
4) A good read
5) Any combination of the above.

Cake maker, Hammocks usually bagged early. They are by the palm trees. Most hammock baggers are very willing to share. The bar man regularly fills the glasses and the bar is always fully stocked.

Other reason for being a bit grumpy - was up very early yesterday to catch a flight to attend pointless meeting.

Welcome, Cake Maker (461) ... if you don't get on with hammocks, you could find a shady corner in the Nick Clarke Memorial Bar, down by the waterfront.
There's a well-stocked BBQ nearby, and as long as you don't mind being nuzzled by the occasional camel (they don't spit, just nick the sausages) it's a lovely quiet spot for such pursuits.

Cake makers are ALWAYs welcome round here. Favourite cakes, anyone? Mine is the damp lemon and almond one in Lawson's Goddess book. So fragrant and melting - oooh the very thought makes the mouth water. Perhaps I should make one and bring it down to the beach later when the sun is dipping.
RachelG - since you asked one of my faves is (really) an eggless, fatless, sugar less fruit cake. Its packed full of dates, apricots, raisins, sultanas, any dried fruit you like. Its deliciously moist and gorgeous. And for the naughty choice...has to be coffee cake. Not too much coffee in the sponge though :)

I recommend ubuntu or gNewsense as very usable and friendly linux versions, the latter of which is sending this message.
A free download or a bootable cd will set up the dual-booting automatically by partitioning the computer's hard drive, so it's as well to use the old pc with the most spare space on its drive. Or an external hard drive can be used.
I wish him luck, and any others wishing to escape MrSoftie. BTW, MrSoftie also owns a substantial stake in the fruity enterprise.....

For all those of you who are cat sitting with me....
Kitty has excelled herself. She has decided that the fishy crunchies that I bought for her are not quite right so are only fit to be thrown over the patio. She has excused herself from feeding times since then.
She's just reappeared in spectacular form. Dozing quietly listening to Robin Lustig I'm suddenly aware of the most ferocious sounding catfight occurring on my front lawn. I wait awhile and hope it will settle, but it continues. Fearful that the cat has been seriously, possibly mortally, injured I run downstairs to rescue the cat. I'm actually beaten to the site of the "fight" by my other neighbour who knows even less about cats than me it appears.
He reports that she was sat on the lawn making all those noises all by herself, there were no other cats around, only choosing to quieten up when she saw my front door open. He suggests that she was wanting some attention from me.
Kitty then launches herself at me and, like a deranged foot-high threshing machine, tries to shred the skin on my shin before diving into the hallway. Neighbour helpfully suggests that she might be scared.
Kitty lies on her back and starts making rumbling noises that we thought might be purring and a sign she's calming down. YES WE BOTH KNOW THAT NOW!!! It's a sign she's revving herself up for another attack - this time on the backs of my knees.
She then settles to lick her nether regions before deciding to chew my carpet, attack my right hand and try to do the same to my left foot as she did to that mouse the other night.
As I type she is pretending to be in another catfight. I've only just finished clearing up the blood from the last victim so I'm not getting caught again! Anyone got any good curry recipes for a tabby?
don't know why i have to keep an eye on all these sand castles anyway

GM - hi...have just heard they pulled the interview :( They sent me a note with a free of copy the mag that I won't be appearing in. Hey ho.
I thought I'd posted the recipe here before but here goes:
200gdates
10 floz water
500g mixed dried fruit
100g chopped dried apricots
150g plain wholemeal flour ( I use spelt )
3 tspn baking powder
1 tspn mixed spice (I use more because I lurrvvvves it)
juice and grated rind on 1 large orange
Method
Preheat the oven to 180. Lightly grease a loaf tin.
Put dates in water and simmer gently until soft, then mash and allow to cool. Put all remaining ingredients large bowl and mix well. Add the cooled and mashed dates. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level out. Bake in the preheated oven for about 55 - 60 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.
May need a slightly cooler oven, this temp seems to work in mine, could always try 160 and see how you go!

Happy - I'm a Linux/Open Source user too (other operating systems are available). Changed over at the start of the year and haven't regretted it. There is a bit of a learning curve as some things are different, but I was used to it within a couple of days. I use Ubuntu, it's one of the most Windoze like distrobutions out there.
Karen - I fully sympathise with you. Cats are in my experience most contrary creatures, purring one minute, a whirling torent of claws and fur the next for no readily apparent reason. I keep a dog.
Out of interest does young Jamie have a twin Sister also of a life saving persuasion? Is she named Angus? I think we should be told.

To add insult to injury I went to pick up neighbour's post. The chap (who I know to be her SO) who asked me to mind the cat for "them" appears to have been left in charge. He received a postcard yesterday thanking him for looking after the cat for the fortnight she was away. It seemed that he could only hack six days of it!
The end of my holiday co-incided with the start of hers so I wasn't "up to speed" with goings-on in the neighbourhood. I'm going to make sure that the start and end of my holiday coincide with hers next year.
Thinking about it, if I'd managed to record kitty last night it could have been a Sound of Summer...
Still not sure what cat is called. She does answer to "Stupid Bloody Cat" though.

Hi Val! Music Festival was fab thanks, just a few minor housing hiccups... a trumpeter still in bed at 11am on leaving day (the brass house is a bit legendry for finding stray nickers, beeercans, people etc when we go to check it) but otherwise not too many problems. We did a Wagner opera (Tannhauser) in a tiny cornish church, which wouldn't have been my choice but was pretty stonking!!

Did I bring cakes ? - I brought along a selection of fine home-made offerings - some traditional British offerings to remind of those still at home - Dundee cake a slightly WI stylie Victoria sponge.... but I also brought some butterscotch sponge, chocolate brownies and some retro pastel iced fairy cakes. Wat out for the lavender on the lilac ones - it is real and I'm not entirely sure its edible .....

Glad fesi went well, shame I didn't get to come down for it. Good luck with the cake. Its keeps really well and is easily adaptable, most dried fruit seems to work (and of course you can soak some of teh ingredients in something a little naughty if extra specialness is called).
Bit disappointed about the article but it seems a shame to waste it, maybe I could post it somewhere (though not sure gow copyright works with that and the journo in question has moved on...)

The daughter is going to Trinity College to read Philosopy and Theology. Her only sorrow is that my father, who was at Oxford and was sure she would make it, died last year before he could say 'I told you so' and be pleased for her. She has wanted to go to Oxford since she was about six and started to be told about universities, so it's a real lifetime ambition.

I was just thinking...
Since tomorrow's going to be a fairly significant day in frog history (can't imagine why...), how about a quick open-ended poll on a new feature to add to the beach (well, the description of). Maybe you'd like the BBQ made more formal, or perhaps you'd prefer the hammocks, or maybe (controversially!) you'd like the description pruned...
Discuss here, and if anything resembling a consensus emerges over the next 12 hours, and if Eddie is daft enough to read it, there may be a microscopically small chance of it entering the description. Even if it doesn't (which is more probable), any discussion/debate will bring us closer to "The Magic Number" (which, I'm reliably informed, isn't 3, or even divisible by it!).

Just in case anyone's still left here, I spent half of lunchtime today debating which of the many pointless postcards of Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley to send to Eddie. In the end, I whittled it down to a choice of four:
A very grainy view of the river Severn, that looks as though it was taken from the top of a cherrypicker parked on the bridge - hence shows virtually nothing of the town or riverside.
I'm still trying to think of a reason anyone would want to visit Kidderminster, but this postcard author evidently thought a statue of Rowland Hill, the 'main' church, and a non-functional drinking fountain were the best views...
A narrow two-way street in Bewdley - the fact the lines disappear is ominous, as is the fact that this is an air quality management zone thingy. Apart from perhaps illustrating why Bewdley has a bypass, I can't imagine why this was chosen as preferable to the riverside.
A wide-beam lock heading from Stourport basins to the River Severn - hideously over-exposed, very grainy, and not even a boat in sight!
I've taken a quick digicam photo of the four postcards, and they've been uploaded to:
this is a great day, it is now a week since my car was broken into.
It was the fourth time in a month.
First time, lock forced

Third time lock forced, steering wheel housing smashed, cable to igition switch cut
Fourth time lock forced steering wheel housing smashed cable to ignition cut, ignition lock smashed
Each time, to the dump, to the dump, to the dump sump dump, Tonto, to pick up new/old locks, housing wiring etc. (The car is so old they were up dates)
Meanwhile I discover
1. The hostel round the corner had been redesignated from people with a drink problem (they can't afford Widow prices) who were very sweet and were forever coming into our back yard to put their cans in our wheelies, to young people who apparently are at car jack school there. Allegedly
2. At some stage they've (the totally impersonal 'they') have nicked a few of my tax discs. This i find out when a large white notice appears on my wind screen saying my car is going to be crushed and i can pick it up as a metal suitcase if i want.
Down the road from me is the prison. (I was going to spray 'let 'em all out it can't make it any worse out here' on the walls until i discoverd that my confidante at a singles club was a PO)
It stands on the edge of Nelson Mandela Park where there's a sign saying not being in prison is true freedom. The prisoners can see it during exercise. How do YOU say 'Leics'? To mean 'dislikes'?
But the prison has cameras which work so my car sits exactly opposite one now.
I feel guilty about giving the prisoners false hopes when they see what was surely going to be a get away car, allegedly, parked rigtht opposite and my anti law and order lobby cred is in shreds but what else can i do with such an old car I can open it with a tin opener if i lock the keys inside (yes, its that old).
