Inside Politics

Mark Devenport | 15:55 UK time, Friday, 24 August 2007

As usual, we have recorded Saturday's Inside Politics ahead of time. This weekend's guest is the constant thorn in Ian Paisley's side, MEP Jim Allister. If you want to hear his thoughts on the likelihood of the formation of a "dissident" unionist political movement and his complaints about the burgeoning number of special advisers at Stormont you can catch the programme on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio Ulster at 12.45.

Why have Jim Allister on the radio let along the television? Northern Ireland in this new phase needs to move on and leave the troubles were they where. In this new era why cant Jim do the same? Jim needs to answer the question - do you want peace with the DUP and Sinn Fein sharing power or do you want people to die? Well Jim? Why dont you get down to real politics off schools, hospitals, infrastructure and anti social behaviour. Surely after the terrible shooting of the 11 year old child in Liverpool we should be doing more to protect our children and protect society rather than bickering and fighting over what has happened. Why dont you be accountable to your electorate instead of being like this? I have never always agreed with Bob McCartney but he knows when he has been defeated.

I have noticed that our highly trained lawyers such as Jim Allister and Bob McCartney who entered politics have little sympathy for political expediency and fudge. They are very structured in their logic and can analyse the capillary bed of supposition where the more usual politican can adopt a boad brush when it suits. They seem to have very strong moral convictions in respect to behaviour which they refuse to compromise. In this world of spin it is good to have a clear cut testimony of the facts of the case.

It looks likley if Jim Allister does form a dissident unionist party he will have former DUP Cllr Mel Lucas in its ranks.Rumor has it that he is now suspended from the party but that did not stop him chairing a south Antrim association meaning last week. One member that was there told me that HQ sent a letter demmanding that the meeting should not go ahead but Cllr Lucas went ahead with the meeting dispite two members walking out. Then the meeting passed a resolotion demanding that the party leadership come to south Antrim and Explain why they have done a U turn by goin into goverment with Sinn Fein.Looks like Cllr Lucas and South Antrim assocation are on collision course with HQ.Possibly more than one thorn in Ian Paisleys side.
