A word, Brian?

Victoria Derbyshire | 13:20 UK time, Thursday, 22 November 2007

Brian BarwickWe are trying to get Brian Barwick, the chief exec of the FA on the show tomorrow to talk to England supporters.

He's the one who . We really want him to come on and talk to you directly - so I'll keep you posted on the blog as to how our bids are going. Watch this space!

Steve McLaren's sacking was the obvious topic for today's show - so we asked our listeners what they'd do to change the England team. How do we make sure England qualify for the World Cup in 2010?

We also spoke to Peter Shilton, Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington and our football correspondent Jonathan Legard...

Reaction on 606 has been pretty much the same all round: "now we may be able to play like a proper world class team and start winning, and not drawing with teams like Macedonia", says Stevesarmy, and he goes on to ask - who will replace him?

That is the question....

==AN UPDATE at 6:10pm==

Well, we've not heard anything from Brian yet, but we'll keep trying! In the meantime, make sure you cast your vote on who you think should replace McClaren - you can vote on the 5 live homepage.

==AN UPDATE at 8:30am Friday==

Still no word on Mr B. The phrase "don't hold your breath" is springing to mind.

Hi five live i have read some of the coments today about the manager and yes he did make mistakes but the players most of all should shoulder most of the blame because of the effort they put in last night.
I am sure the manager did not say go out and play Pub football for 15 matches
    thank you

Here's the bottom line. How do we play better when it comes to the crunch? wednesday night was laughable. I accept that Mclaren had some bad luck with injuries, but at no point in the last 10 years have England played well.

How do we inspire the multi millionaires to do thier bit for the nation? Talk is cheap, (though for all the rubbish that is spouted about him at least you can belive Beckham is hurt about this, he actually cares) but why in the day after this latest disaster has nobody else put thier head above the parapet. Shame on them alll.......

To whom is the FA responsible ??

Who pays their salaries and what qualifications do they have that ENTITLES them to carry on BUMBLING.

Next look at the County FA organisation.
Run by elderly people in order to receive payment by (as with all in Senior Football) trips to the capital and free tickets to games primarily at Wembley.
The bumbledom that is Wembley is another story

Don’t quote Sir T B as an antidote, he thinks that standardising coaching for Under 11s is all that is necessary.

Coaching natural ability OUT of youngsters is the start of the slippery slope resulting in non qualification at International level.

The FA condones mixing/playing U16s with players of up to 40+ in the professional game,
but they can’t play against U19s in an U19 League !!??!!
The funding of Grassroots football is being eroded in order to continue funding the FA/County FA/Premiership etc. etc.

Why do you think that the English team have the god given right to qualify for every major tournament. Since last night it has featured as headline news. They deserved to lose. Scotland did not but that has hardly got a mention-they played with a passion the English team don't have and for your commentator to say that he hoped the Andorra team would throw them a lifeline was ridiculous.

why do you have to bid for barwick ? he should be coming out and explaining himselves to the fans who pay through thenose week in week out to follow their local club and the national team !! there is so much of th fans money sloshing around in the FA, that the FA should be answerable to the fans....

Some people have been saying that the numbers of foreign players in the premiere league contributes to England's woes -that other countries benefit from this and that the numbers of foreigners should be capped. From an outsider's point of view I disagree. The premiere league is really an "international super league" drawing the best players from the top clubs around the world. The fact that the league is based in England and games are played in England is not relevant and is only because of tv and advertising, etc. The teams may have English names but they are not really English they are international. The English First division is more of a fair comparison with premiere divisions around the world and this should be seen as the exclusively English division, the very best players aiming to be promoted to the international super premier league. Within England more emphahsis should be placed on this division for home grown talent and a future England "team".

If you can get Mr.Barwick to put his head above the parapet please ask him if he has in mind a performance related contract for a new manager that goes both ways--particulary -if no qualification for specific competitions then no fancy big reward for failure. Lets get someone pumped up , exudes confidence and believes in their ability to get results.

Please ask barwick did he ever watch maclaren play lampard and gerrard and wonder why. They were sussed out as a useless pair twenty games ago and yet his managerial first (?) pick persisted in playing them. Didn't he once think what a huge error he had made ?
Will somebody be held to account over the state of the pitch, the drainage system and use of the roof.
    that was a disgrace.
and please ask him what his next job will be

england should have qualified from that group, but playing as they did on wednesday they didn't deserve to.
No country from these isles qualified what does that say about the game in england as the majority of the players are based in england

    Hi
Any review of the FA and the senior teams performance should take on board that the current premiership has failed English football. It does not reflect English football it reflects football in England. To find good senior players perhaps we have to start with a trawl through the Championship. These players often work harder and have true aspirations to progress and the international team is a very worthy goal for them. Many English premiership players have more rewards in club football and too many foreign players to "lean" on.
Start with a truly blank teamsheet !!!

England do not have a God given right to qualify for any tournament, let's be brutally honest, the players at our disposal are not good enough. There isn't a manager anywhere in the world who can make a difference to our players, it is down to the fact that we, as a country, have destroyed the infrastructure that allowed promising players to blossom.
Selling playing fields, risk assessments that ban even moderate contact sports, teachers who are discouraged from promoting competitive sport, parents who bully children into primitive, naive tactics.
All these factors are contributing to a dearth of up and coming talent - not the occupancy of foreign players in the premiership as a good player will always surface.
Until we change the management of players at all levels, particularly at youth level, we will never develop a team that has the vision to control the ball, retain possession and play intelligent, dynamic football. No manager, however good, will succeed with the England team until we have competent, composed players who can play at the highest level under the pressure that comes in major tournaments.

I think it's going to be wonderful to be able to watch a football tournament (featuring national teams) without fear of xenophobia in the press and some of the In-ger-land fans, hate crime and just general hatred and damnation of other countries and their people.

(Or maybe it'll happen anyway because, by then, the In-ger-land fans and the pundits won't be blaming the players or management team but another national team or another nation of people. Or, they could resume usual behaviour of not caring about England not being there but, instead, filling time by shouting about how much 'we' (and how I dislike that phrase) hate the French, hate the Germans, hate any nation that beats England or possibly just making inappropriate comments about World War Two....)

If the former be true (rather than the usual, nightmareish latter), roll on Euro 2008!
