The end of Xmas? and other ideas for today
Hi there. It's a grey and rainy day in London, and Bush House, our elegant Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú office block surrounded by traffic on all sides, feels a bit like a ship in a storm. Still, there are plenty of potential talking points out there to catch the eye, including Christmas decorations, life on the moon, and the Baker report......read on.
If you're not Christian, do you feel offended by people putting up Cristmas decorations at work or in public places? According to a new survey of British employers, 75% are banning Christmas trees, lights and other decorations from the office out of such concern. Are they right to do so? Should we impose the majority religion and its festivals on others? Or is this yet another mad consequence of a kind of multicultural panic?
From office space to outer space......NASA, the US space agency, says it's planning to build a permanent base on the Moon soon after 2020. It would serve as an outpost for future travel to Mars. (Won't be long before Moon and Mars residents engage in oneupmanship over their postal addresses, a bit like London's Zone 1 residents and their outer zone neighbours). So would you want to live there? Is it feasible? Or yet another big waste of money?
Then there's the Iraq report, due out tomorrow from James Baker and his team. At our morning editorial meeting here at the World Service, there was a discussion about President Bush's character and how that might influence his response to the report. Will his stubbornness lead him to ignore its recommendations? How new are their ideas anyway? Do you want to talk about it today?
