The execution of Saddam came too early. The crime for which he was tried was only one of the many atrocities he committed, the Iraqi government should have continued to prosecute cases against him to demonstrate just how murderous he was towards all Iraqis, not just the Shia, and then perhaps better steps towards reconciliation could have been taken.

I notice that this doesn't seem to apply to the devout Muslims in the insurgency in Iraq, who on the same day as the execution blew up thirty of their fellow Muslim Iraqis (civilians) in Kufa, Southern Iraq; or, indeed, to the late Mr Hussein himself, who apparently executed lots of people himself during Eid.

Please, enough of Saddam Hussein, he was dead the moment the Americans captured him. We knew it as did he, and he was executed at the beginning of Ede to send a message to Muslims. Saddam was a Hitler of the Arab world. If Jews were at the hanging of Hitler and they had shouted "you are going to hell!" would we have been so critical? All these criticisms are asking for perfect justice for Hussein, while he gave no justice to the hundreds of thousands he butchered. He got more than enough of a chance to spout off in court (too much, I thought) self-righteously over a prolonged period of time. Would he have done the same for an American leader or a Shi'ite one or a Kurdish one? I am Catholic and follow the teachings of the church, including opposing capital punishment under most circumstances. Saddam was an exception, as Idi Amin, Pol Pot and Stalin would have been. God save us all from any more of their ilk!

It wasn't gangster justice, he had a judicious trial, in which defenders and prosecutors risked and lost their lives to give him a hearing. Sadaam was a murderous dictator who got what he deserved. The judgment was rendered and there was no reason to delay. The timing with a holiday was just coincidental. More trial about more of his murders would have been moot. I object to the woman caller who said it was offensive to Muslims. I've never heard of Muslims being offended by Sadaam's crimes, the terrorist acts of Hamas, etc or the honor killing of Muslim women by their husbands or relatives.
