Do you Yahoo after the China rights case?

Ros Atkins Ros Atkins | 18:00 UK time, Tuesday, 28 August 2007

Now here's a stat for you - exactly 300 of you receiving this WHYS Daily Email have a address. I also have one, as does every member of my immediate family, and most of my friends. I don't need to look up the figures to know that is one of the biggest web-based email providers in the business. That's not to mention the vast array of other . A lot of us use Yahoo! which is probably why this story has hit a nerve...

by the for sharing information about its users with the Chinese government. That information led to some dissidents being arrested; one was jailed for ten years.

Yahoo! contests the extent to which their actions contributed to the arrests and convictions, but it's this comment in court, as much as the co-operation, which has sparked debate.

In the case this week, Yahoo said this... "Defendants cannot be expected, let alone ordered to violate another nation's laws."

Do you agree? Should companies always adhere to laws of the countries they operate in? In this case, with the possible consequences known, should Yahoo! have refused to obey Chinese law even if that meant jeopardising their business in China?

HAS THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN BEEN LOST?
You may well have seen detailing the sharp rise in opium production in Afghanistan. The Afghan ambassador to the UN says it's due to the destabilisation in the south by the Taliban - namely the Helmand province.

Bearing in mind that the US and its allies arrived in 2001 with the express goal of removing the Taliban from power and influence, plenty of people are asking if the war there has been lost. The UK ambassador in Kabul said a couple of months ago that UK troops may have to stay for decades, but is there the progress to justify such long-term involvement?

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE 9/11 SHOW?
If you were one of the many who thought we shouldn't have covered the story, see my comment (#122) for a response.

CINDY SHEEHAN
You may have heard her on the show last week arguing with a woman called Sue Robertson, who has three sons all serving in the US military. In fact it was Sue's presence on the show that angered Cindy. Well Sue has carefully gone through all of your comments and responded to them.

Speak to you later.
