Paintings, photography, film and exhibits from collections across the UK will all be on show at Brunel and the Art of Invention, which demonstrates how art, science and engineering have inspired invention since the 19th Century. Brunel's Suspension Bridge, ss Great Britain and the Great Western Railway are all featured. Highlights also include William Powell Frith's magnificent large-scale painting The Railway Station (1862). The painting records the intricate detail of Brunel's architecture at Paddington Station as well as capturing the romance and excitement of the railway.

Visitors will also be to watch the famous Lumiere Brothers - Arriv茅e d'un train 脿 la Ciotat (1895). The one-shot film became infamous for the incident at its world premiere when the audience - unfamiliar with the cinema - thought the train was really heading right for them, and panicked. The exhibition also includes works by Charles Darwin and Brunel's original sketchbooks. Examples of modern industrial engineering show how creative invention is still thriving today, with a Pegasus Rolls Royce Aero engine and a Mini on display. There will also be a programme of free events, talks and activities at the museum between 15 April and 18 June while the exhibition is running. Admission to the museum is also free. |
