Learning the Spanish ropes

Four thousand people are currently being trained to work in the new Cabot Circus development which opens on Thursday. But for some Bristolians it's not just a case of learning how to work the till.

Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Radio Bristol reporter, Robin Markwell, listened in on a training session at one of the new restaurants, where the team will have to be able to speak an entirely different language.

Robin spoke first to waitress Laura, who admitted to speaking a little Spanish from her holidays there.

Robin asked Veronica, who was training the staff, why it was important for those working at the restaurantÌý to speak Spanish - when most customers wouldn't.

"People go to Spain on holiday - it's a really popular destination to go on holidays - and they like to try out their Spanish when they come to La Tasca. I think it's really good for the staff to pick up Spanish as well," she said.

The menu at the restaurant is all written in Spanish, as are the tills, so the staff have to know the names of items in Spanish.

Another Spanish student at the restaurant, Aaron, shared his tips for speaking Spanish to the customers: "Try not to speak too much!"

A couple of Spaniards, Pablo and Eduardo will also be working at the restaurant and say restaurant staff are having difficulties pronouncing the names of some of the beers.

Robin asked if there was a lot of spittle involved in speaking Spanish.

"Spanish speak at the end of the mouth and English more in the throat," they admitted.
