Celebrate Chinese culture with traditional dance
If you're a fan of Chinese New Year and love incredible performances and dancing, Blue Peter has a treat for you. We invited some inspiring young dancers to perform and showcase three different types of traditional Chinese dances. Check them out now!
What is water sleeve dancing?
Water sleeve dancing is a type of traditional Chinese dance that dates back over 2,000 years. The long sleeves enhance the expression of movements, making the actions appear even more graceful and beautiful.
The design and aesthetic of the water sleeves are intended to resemble waves or drifting clouds as they sway in the wind. It is a truly beautiful style of dance.
What is fan dancing?
Fan dancing is another historical folk tradition in China celebrating culture and elegance. The fans create an extension of the hand and are used to emphasise a dancer's movements to symbolise grace and beauty.
What is drum dancing?
Drum dancing originated in ancient China as part of court performances. Dancers would step on drums to create sounds and rhythms while singing and dancing. Traditionally, this form of performance was used to celebrate palace festivals or accompany daily banquets in the imperial court. It looks so fun!
