Make a fruity bird feeder
Make this juicy bird feeder using an orange and attract birds from near and far to your back yard or garden.
- 1 orange (you can eat the other half)
- 1 cup bird seed (or a mix of sunflowers seeds, peanuts and dried fruit)
- 100g lard or vegetable fat
- String
- Scissors
- Bamboo skewers, twigs or sticks
- Tablespoon
Step One
Cut an orange in half and use your tablespoon to scoop out the centre. You can save that juicy goodness to eat later – yum!
Step Two
Get ready for the fun bit… this can get quite messy, so wear a pair of gloves if you have them and make sure you wash your hands properly afterwards.
Grab your fat or lard and roll it into a ball between your hands, this ball will go back inside the orange skin. Roll your ball in a bowl of bird seed and make sure to cover the whole thing.
Step Three
Push your fat ball into the orange. The skin creates a bowl shape that your fat ball will fit into. You can add more bird seed here.
Step Four
To create a ledge for the birds to sit on, carefully push two bamboo skewers into the orange to create a cross shape - Make sure you have an adult to help you with this bit!
TOP TIP If you don’t have any bamboo skewers, make a hole using a pen and poke a stick through instead. You could collect some twigs on a walk 💚
Step Five
Finally, attach a piece of string to the middle of each of the four sections. Then make another knot at the top.
Once you have finished, find a tree to hang your bird feeder on and wait to see if any birds want to come by for a snack.
