Maths and Puzzles: learning area

Develop your child's maths and problem-solving skills with ideas and activities from CBeebies

What's this learning area about?

When you see an activity labelled with the ‘Maths & puzzles’ icon on CBeebies, it means that it can help your child to develop their mathematical and problem-solving skills.

For young children, developing these vital skills is about much more than just adding up and taking away. Looking at patterns and colours, understanding numbers and shape, and comparing measurements are all part of this learning area.

At CBeebies, we look at the thinking behind what children are learning and how maths skills can be used in everyday life. Very early on, children become aware of similarities and differences between the things around them.

Developing the language and skills to compare different shapes and sizes forms the basis for mathematical skills leading onto counting, adding and subtracting. Telling the time, weighing and measuring all come together to help children see patterns in the world around us and solve puzzles.

The way maths is taught in schools has changed a lot and some of the terms used and ways of doing things may seem unfamiliar to grown-ups, so we have created this special toolkit for parents, complete with easy-to-understand explanations of the concepts children are expected to learn from birth to six, and lots of fun activities that you can build into your everyday life to help them develop bags of maths confidence and ability ready for their time at school.

At CBeebies, our learning areas reflect those found in the Early Years curricula of the UK; the EYFS in England and Wales, the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland, and the Foundation Stage in Northern Ireland. These are the guidelines that all educational settings (like nurseries, schools and child-minders) follow, to help children develop knowledge, skills and understanding using a fun, play-based approach. We reflect these learning areas so you can be sure that what your child learns from CBeebies perfectly complements what they are taught when they get to nursery and school.

CBeebies’ learning area ‘Maths and Puzzles’ links to Mathematics (England), Mathematics (Scotland), Mathematical Development (Wales), and Mathematics and Numeracy (Northern Ireland).
