The George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton has just announced the artist it is commissioning as part of its development.

The nationally-advertised commission received 140 applications, which had to be shortlisted three times!

The successful artist has now been named as Gina Glover.

She will work with the architect and contractor of the new Day Procedures Unit to produce a work that aims to:

A new building

The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust is building a new Day Procedures Unit at the heart of their site in Nuneaton. This will bring together existing services of Day Surgery, Management of Pain and Endoscopy.

The new build is due to start in June 2002, so the unit can be operational by March 2003.

Artist's input

The hospital have commissioned Gina Glover to work with the design team to optimise the environment for both the patients and staff in a partnership project with Warwickshire County Council's Arts Service.

The main task for the artist will be to create an integral artwork as part of the Day Procedures reception and waiting area.

Calming influence

The activity within the new unit will be very high and so the artist has been employed to contribute to it being a calm environment to reduce stress. The aim is that it will be fresh relaxing and contemporary in its ambience.

Patient's involvement

The hospital is committed to community participation and so far it has held a workshop to identify key issues. Patients, members of the community and staff will be invited to join in the selection of the artwork and to discuss designs with the artist.

A great response

Jacki Wilkes, of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, said the response to the project was amazing:

"We had so many more applications than we were expecting. Although some of the artists were local we had a surprising amount of people wanting to come and work here from London.

"We had a lot of advise on the commission from the Arts Service at Warwickshire County Council and I think with their help we managed to compile a really attractive proposal.

"Artists appreciate us wanting them to be involved in the very early stages of the build."

The total budget for the research and consultation, fee, expenses, materials and installation has been set at 拢15,000.

Starting soon
Gina Glover accepted the commission just days ago. We will have an update on the progress of the project and examples of her work here soon.
