The Easter story

Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

It is one of the most important Christian festivals of the year, and is celebrated with great joy.

The date of Easter changes each year, and several other Christian festivals fix their dates by reference to Easter.

For Easter, churches are filled with flowers, and there are special hymns and songs. But not all Easter customs are Christian, some, such as the Easter bunny, and the name "Easter" are pagan in origin.

The Easter Story is the heart of Christianity...

On Good Friday, Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixion. His body was taken down from the cross, and buried in a cave. The tomb was guarded and an enormous stone was put over the entrance, so that no-one could steal the body. On the following Sunday, some women visited the grave and found that the stone had been moved, and that the tomb was empty.

Jesus himself was seen that day, and for days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead.

It's spring, the time of year when chicks are hatching and the flowers have started growing!

Easter is a Christian festival that takes place in spring. It is a time for people to remember when Jesus Christ was re-born.

For many people today, Easter represents new life and it is celebrated by people of different religions and beliefs.

New life is symbolised by the egg, often in chocolate varieties, which fill the shelves of shops and supermarkets all over the UK.

We gave away two yummy organic chocolate eggs from Down To Earth organic food shop in Earlsdon and certificates to everyone who created Easter egg design work from Foleshill C of E Primary, Stoke Primary and Sir Henry Parkes Primary schools in Coventry.

We weren't looking for any old egg. Our Easter bunny searched the region for a special egg designed by you!

What you'll need
Materials for egg design
Materials that you could use for egg designing
Remember that you don't need to spend a fortune to make your egg designs.

You can use materials found around the house, like felt-tip pens, stickers, glue, ribbon, paint, paper and any other craft materials you have.

You can even recycle old sweet wrappers, birthday cards or other colourful food packaging.

Take eggstra care!
When creating your egg, take care.

You can ask an adult to help you 'blow' the insides out of the egg. This is quite tricky, so they need to know what they're doing.

It's much easier to ask an adult to hard-boil the egg in a pan of boiling water for about 10 minutes.

When it's cool, you can start your design work.

It's best not to eat it afterwards, as the glue, paint and felt-tips may not taste good!

If you don't want to involve the real thing, then you can send in a picture of your design instead.

Just draw an egg and decorate it any way you like, then send it to us.

Everyone wins!
When you send in your art and design work or photographs, you'll be added to the egg picture gallery.

You can view the picture galleries by following the links on the left, or clicking the images button below.
