FACTS
| Tans have only been popular in relatively recent years.
In the 17th Century it was fashionable to have a very pale complexion, to show you were rich enough not to work outside in the fields.
To make quite sure their skin remained pale, people sometimes wore masks when outdoors.
Powders and creams could also help achieve pallor, although these could crack on the skin.
