Fans of the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team have unveiled a new bar dedicated to their favourite team. It's hoped having a regular place for followers to meet will help attract more support to the British National League team.

The Blaze Bar has been established in an almost-redundant function room at the Four Provinces Irish club in Spon End, Coventry. Loyal regulars at the bar - known affectionately as the 4Ps - are well behind the scheme.

In fact, it was a bunch of regulars that came up with the idea in the first place! Jenny is the project manager behind the scheme and she said the bar is truly the story of a little acorn becoming a huge old oak tree!

The story begins

The story begins last season when former Blaze goalkeeper Ian Burt arrived in the area and his girlfriend starting working at the 4Ps.

"He used to come and have a drink at the end of her shift before taking her home and then he started coming in with his friends, who were hockey players as well, and then more fans started coming down," she said.

There were already some fans based at the 4Ps, but having the players drinking their saw more and more regulars becoming hooked on the sport, the idea of having a space dedicated to the club began to develop.

Nowhere to go

"There was nowhere really for fans to meet up after games or have events or anything - plus I always thought the function room at the 4Ps was dead space, so we started to talk to the licensee, Kieran Connolly, about the idea."

Within a matter of weeks, work had begun. The upstairs of the Allesley Old Road pub is now an ice-hockey palace, featuring memorabilia and souvenirs from clubs all over the world - as well as the Blaze - and it's hoped the collection will build over time.

Open all hours
The bar will be open on match nights next season, which begins on 8 September, and as the Blaze Bar is the official Man of the Match sponsor, players will be heading down for a pint of the black stuff after games as well.

"Coventry prides itself on its close relationship with the fans and everyone will get a chance to mix with players and officials. It's like one big happy family," she said.

The Blaze Bar opened officially on 21 August. Its next major event is a Meet the Players evening on 4 September.
